Amanda's obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden and unexpected passing of our beloved team member, Amanda.

Amanda was a bright light within our Dix Hills Animal Hospital family — her kindness, her compassion for every patient, and the love she brought into our building each day touched all of us. She was also incredibly knowledgeable and endlessly generous with that knowledge. Many of us learned new techniques, treatment approaches, and new ways of thinking about patient care because of her. She made all of us better.

Amanda leaves behind her cherished cat, Puffin, who she adored. As a team, we are committed to giving Puffin all the love, care, and security he deserves. Many clients and friends have already asked how they can help. In response, we have created a Puffin Care Fund through Ever Loved, where contributions will go directly toward his ongoing care and support during this transition.

Through the Ever Loved page, you may also share memories, photos, or stories of Amanda. These messages of love and remembrance will mean so much to her family, her friends, and to all of us here at the hospital who were lucky enough to work alongside her.

If you feel moved to contribute or share a remembrance, you may do so here.

Obituary for Amanda Zayas

Written by her sister Gabrielle Zayas

Amanda Danielle Zayas, 31, of Bohemia, New York, passed away on November 3, 2025. Born on February 17, 1994, in Flushing, New York, Amanda was the beloved daughter of Denise Zayas and Manuel Zayas, and stepdaughter of Mark Flynn.

From a young age, Amanda’s love for animals was undeniable—she knew at just five years old that she was destined to work with them. She fulfilled that dream as a dedicated veterinary nurse, working in several animal hospitals before finding her home at Dix Hills Animal Hospital. Her compassion and commitment to every animal she cared for touched the lives of countless pets and their families.

Amanda’s heart was as big as her personality. She was small in stature but a fierce, fiery force of nature—someone who would drop everything to help the people she loved. She had an infectious laugh that could fill a room and a sense of humor that could make anyone burst out laughing—though sometimes her jokes would leave people shaking their heads, saying, “What?” Her one-of-a-kind personality made her truly unforgettable.

Amanda was a unique soul who walked her own path and paved the way in life on her own terms. She lived boldly, loved deeply, and left an impression that will never fade.

In deepest sorrow, we mourn the loss of a truly unique and unmatched soul. Amanda’s light, laughter, and love will echo in our hearts forever.

A true lover of life, Amanda enjoyed karaoke, dancing in her living room, working out, and spending time with her friends. She was passionate about music and could often be found singing along to her favorite songs.

Amanda is survived by her loving fur baby Puffin; her devoted boyfriend, Numan Ali; her mother, Denise Zayas; her father, Manuel Zayas; her stepfather, Mark Flynn; her sisters, Alicia Zayas, Gabriella Zayas, and Taylor Biordi; and her cherished nieces and nephews, Damien Hurstel, Eliana Amaya, Bri Aragundi, and Alexander Shearer. She will now be rejoined with her first fur baby Lily in heaven.

Amanda will be remembered for her fierce loyalty, her boundless love, and the joy she brought to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
