Amalia's obituary

Amalia Amado Torres
July 10, 1913 - December 9, 2017

Amalia passed away peacefully in Seal Beach, California. Amalia was a devoted mother to Elvia Torres and Ylia Ross; a caring mother-in-law to Frank Torres and Ernie Ross; a loving grandmother to Ylianna, Francisco (Jennifer), Enrique (Lucinda), Ricardo (Donni) and Roberto; an adoring great-grandmother to Marisa Romo, Marco Romo, Joseph Torres, Alyssa Torres, Michael Torres, Mateo Torres, Carter Torres and Francesca Torres; and a caring aunt to many nieces and nephews.

She was born in Tucson, Arizona, descended from old Tucsonian families, the Amados and the Elias’s. The youngest of four children, she was preceded in death by her husband, Enrique Torres Jr., three brothers: Antonio, Gustavo and Pablo Amado, her father Antonio Amado Sr. and her mother Maria Elias Amado.

After she married she moved to Nogales, Arizona. After her husband died in 1954, she moved back to Tucson and graduated from the University of Arizona. She became one of the first Head Start teachers at what was then Old Pascua Village with the Yaqui Indian community. After she retired, she moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon, to live with her daughter and husband, Elvia and Frank, and to spend more time with her five grandchildren. She moved with them to Chula Vista, California, and later to Sonora, California. She eventually moved to Long Beach, California with her daughter, Ylia and son in law, Ernie.

She was famous for her homemade cookies and cakes which the neighbor teens came over regularly to sample. Her pie and tamale recipes have been handed down from generation to generation. She loved to sew and learned to quilt in her 70’s and made many beautiful quilts for her family to treasure. Many of her summers were spent travelling to various parts of the United States and Puerto Rico, Europe, South America, Hong Kong, Canada and Mexico.

Her whole life was dedicated to family and she will be greatly missed.
