Alyce's obituary
Alyce Ann Amussen was born on August 3,1948 at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. to Robert (Bernie) and Nellie Ruth Willis. She grew up in Silver Spring, MD alongside her beloved siblings Donna (Wood), Bert Willis, and Roz (Hedrick)—in a home filled with love, laughter, and the closeness of family. During her childhood, Alyce learned to play the accordion, loved watching Shirley Temple, and could be found crying at the end of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.
She graduated from Albert Einstein High School in 1966 and continued her education taking courses at the University of Maryland. On April 1, 1972, Alyce married the love of her life, David Amussen. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised their two children, Michael and Shea, in Silver Spring, MD. Their marriage of 53 years was a true partnership, filled with devotion, humor, and unwavering support for one another.
Alyce devoted much of her life to caring for others. For nearly two decades, she opened her home to countless children through her in-home daycare, where every child was treated with the same love, patience, and attention she gave her own. Beyond her home, Alyce was deeply involved in her community, volunteering with organizations that lifted others up and always seeking ways to make life better for those around her.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. Alyce was a devoted and longtime member of Hughes United Methodist Church in Silver Spring, MD, and later, during her retirement years, at Conley’s United Methodist Church in Lewes, DE. Through her faith and service, she touched lives in ways both profound and quiet. At church without a doubt, she could be found singing in the choir and playing handbells.
She had an incredible ability to make all who encountered her feel truly loved and seen. Alyce will be remembered for her warmth, her endless kindness, and her quick wit. She had the remarkable gift of making everyone feel deeply valued. She could talk for hours—listening just as much as she shared—and she never let anyone leave her presence without feeling lighter in spirit. Her talent for sewing and needlepoint was extraordinary, and so many family and friends now hold pieces of her handiwork as treasured reminders of her love and care.
Alyce is preceded in death by her parents, Bernie and Ruth, brother-in-law, Tim Amussen, and dear cousin, Bob Amburn who she truly missed. She leaves behind her husband David ( Mr Honey), her children Michael (Boo in the Bucket) (Tammy) and Shea (Saddie Klutz Bottom) (John), and her seven grandchildren—Jordan (Babs), Madeline (Marge), Olivia (Miss O), Lex (Noodle), Chloe (Clovis Alowishous), Arianna (Penacola), and Nico (Sparkie)—each of whom brought immense joy and laughter to her life. She is also survived by her siblings Donna, Bert and Roz who shared a lifetime of memories and love with her. She also leaves behind her long life best friend but in her heart a Sister of choice Valerie Himes. Alyce’s circle of friends, including her cherished Dinner Club companions, will forever feel her absence.
Though her passing leaves a deep ache in our hearts, Alyce’s spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched, the laughter she shared, and the love she gave so freely.
The family will welcome family and friends to honor and celebrate Alyce’s life at services in Maryland and Delaware
