Alton's obituary
In Loving Memory of Alton Dean Davis
September 10, 1938 - June 21, 2023
Family and friends mourn the loss of a dedicated pastor, esteemed community leader, and cherished father and grandfather. Alton Dean Davis, born to Velma Ethel Wood and William Harrison Davis, entered this world on September 10, 1938. Today, we bid farewell to a remarkable individual who touched countless lives during his time with us.
Alton's educational journey took him to thirteen schools throughout his formative years. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Fresno, California in 1956, a testament to his determination and adaptability. After graduating, Alton attended Oakland City University. It was during his time there that he crossed paths with Frances Ann Liles, an encounter that would shape the course of his life.
On March 12, 1960, Alton and Frances exchanged vows in Tulsa, Oklahoma, embarking on a journey of love, faith, and mutual support that would span over six decades. Their union was a testament to the power of devotion and resilience, serving as a shining example to all who knew them.
Alton's spiritual calling led him to become the pastor for his first church at New Liberty General Baptist. Driven by his unwavering faith, he pursued further theological education and obtained a master's degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. This knowledge and passion for spreading the gospel propelled him to become the pastor of Main Street General Baptist, the largest congregation in the General Baptist association at the time.
Alton’s connection to Oakland City University endured throughout the years. His unwavering dedication to the institution was evident by his service as Vice President, Board of Trustees member, and interim President. His commitment to education and nurturing young minds shone brightly throughout his tenure.
Alton's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish a network of businesses across Kentucky and Southern Indiana, leaving an indelible mark on the local communities. However, it was his founding of the Church of the Cross in Evansville, Indiana that truly showcased his commitment to sharing his faith and fostering a strong sense of community among his congregants.
Alton was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Frances, whose unwavering support and love were the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his three children, Michael Davis, Julie Wilson, and Philip Davis, who carry forward his legacy of love and dedication. His memory will also be cherished by his six grandchildren, Jessica, Audrey, and Jenna Davis, Piper and Delaney Wilson, and Ian Davis, who will forever hold him in their hearts.
Alton Dean Davis, a man of unwavering faith, a pillar of strength, and a devoted servant of God, has left an indelible mark on our lives. As we bid him farewell, let us remember his exceptional spirit and the immeasurable impact he had on his family, friends, and the communities he touched. May his soul find eternal peace.
