Alona's obituary

A Time to be Born: Alona Elvina Dorsey, otherwise affectionately known as, “Mommy”, "Mama Dorsey”, “Lona Dona”, and “Nana”, by the ones who love her the most, was born on May 23rd, 1949, in Brooklyn, New York to the late James Payne and Hilda Kelly. However, she was loved unconditionally and reared by the late Richard & Elvina Mack. She had one brother, Richard Kelly.

A Time to Live : Mommy attended John Adams High School and later transferred to Shimer High School. She married George Dorsey Sr. (who preceded her in death on June 8th, 2018) in 1965. They had six beautiful children together; four girls and two boys, which included a set of fraternal twin girls. They separated shortly after the birth of their final baby girl.

A Time to Love : Mommy had a deep and unparalleled love for her children. She was a part of the PTA at their schools and never missed a big day for any of them. The same would remain true for when those children grew up and had children of their own. Mommy was front and center at graduations, awards ceremonies and other significant days for her grandchildren. Mommy was well known for her acute attention to detail and meticulous organization. She would help her mother pay the bills by recording specific dates and amounts. She would iron the laundry as it came out- down to the underwear and pillowcases. Mommy would answer her landline phone and sounded just like a telephone operator, greeting you with, “Dorsey residence”. Mommy was one of the few people who still owned a traditional phonebook and kept up to date contact information for everyone. Mommy was a beloved member in her community- always lending a helping hand where she saw fit. Mommy is known for quite a few things; to name a few: her infectious laugh, her love of animals, her love for crossword puzzles, and DANCING! Mommy was notorious for breaking out in dance at any given moment to any song. She opened her doors to neighbors, family, and foes and made them feel right at home. Despite the fragility of her heart in the latter part of her days, it still beamed with an immeasurable amount of LOVE.

A Time to Say Goodbye : After a five-years bout of congestive heart failure and COPD, God saw fit to lay Mommy’s heart to rest. It’s been a long journey and her fragile heart simply couldn’t take it anymore. On the evening of Tuesday, April 7th, 2020 at 11:23pm, in the comfort of her physical home, Mommy made her transition to her eternal home and gained her wings.
A Time to Mourn : Mommy leaves to mourn: her brother Richard Kelly and sister in law Dianne Kelly, nephews: Richard “Nipsey” Kelly and Kyle Kelly, her cousin/sister in law, Agnes Dorsey, her children: Georgette Dorsey (Jefferson Wilder), Sharon Dorsey-Smith, Karen Dorsey (Bruce Kirby), George Dorsey Jr., Clarence Dorsey, and Nicole Dorsey (Sterling Jones); her grandchildren: Milton Dorsey, Michael Cole, Tatiana Walker, Elvina Jones (Keith Jones), Justine Dorsey, Sterling Jones, Ashleigh Dorsey, Brittany Dorsey, Julian Floyd, George Dorsey III,Tariq Kirby,Tyrell Kirby and Jamir Dorsey ; her great-grandchildren: Aaliyah Dorsey, Damiya Dorsey, Rihanna Dorsey, Tatiana Whaley, Nevaeh Jones, Terrell Jones, TaMeya Hamilton, Ava Dorsey, Kairi Thompson, Kailani Thompson, Patience Dorsey, first cousins Robert Kelly and Gregory Kelly, her dearest lifelong best friend, Jeanette Sampson, her dog, Starrlight, cat, Kitty, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Our sorrow is much easier to bear, with God’s love and the love and support from family and friends.

Prepared with Love,
The Family
