Alma's obituary
Alma Hartness Medley, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away on December 30, 2023, at the age of 81, in Sewell, NJ.
Alma was born on August 8, 1942, in Sanford, NC, to Eugene and Bessie Street. She graduated from W.B. Wicker School in Sanford, NC, and went on to attend beauty school in her early 20s. She met her loving husband, Isaac, in Camden, NJ, and they married in 1967, raising 3 boys: Dwayne, John & Eric.
Isaac & Alma had a great life together, and enjoyed spending quality time during their 56 years of loving, faithful marriage, taking many vacations, participating in family gatherings, attending church together, and raising their children. They took great pleasure in taking their children to the beach as kids, and to outings at the park, and later in life, enjoyed trips to destinations such as Florida, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, London and Paris.
Throughout her career, Alma worked as a nurse's aid and social worker, always finding fulfillment in helping others, especially the elderly.
Alma was a sweet and wonderful person who found joy in the simple things in life. She had a deep love for family, music, singing, and going to church. You could often hear Alma singing spirituals to herself as she went about her daily activities. She cherished the moments when her family would gather at her house, celebrating birthdays and milestones, sharing meals, and laughing about old times (She also had a guilty pleasure of watching court shows on TV).
Despite her illness, Alma remained private about her condition until very recently. Her hope, initially, was to quietly receive treatment, overcome the illness, and avoid causing worry to her loved ones. Unfortunately, it took her much sooner than anticipated.
Alma is survived - and will be dearly missed by - her loving husband, Isaac, and her sons: Dwayne Street (& Linda), John Medley (& Celia), and Eric Medley, her nephew Tyrone Medley (& Yvonne), her sisters: Stella Haywood, Geneva McCormick, Velma Etheridge, and Evelyn Davis, her nieces: Vanessa, Sheila, Pamela and nephew Rodney, her dear friend, Virginia Forchion, and a whole host of other family & friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Street, her mother, Bessie Street, her brothers, Warren Street and James Street, and her sister, Nina Verbal.
Alma was a faithful member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Camden, NJ, where she found solace and strength in her faith. She worshipped there, and was an active member of the church community. She was a member of the Nurse’s Ministry, the Inspirational Choir, where she was very loved & appreciated, the Scholarship Ministry, and attended Sunday School whenever she could.
Alma loved life, and wanted to stay here as long as she possibly could. Despite her illness, she departed from us sooner than expected, and we all miss her dearly. Thank you for celebrating her life with us.
