Alma's obituary
Alma Rosa Passarell Carpi entered into eternal rest on January 24, 2025, at the age of 82. She was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on May 30, 1942, to her mother, Lucy. Alma grew up in the Washington Heights section of New York City and graduated from George Washington High School. Eager to start her career, her journey took her to Chicago and San Francisco, where she enjoyed living and working. Her devoted mother accompanied her during her moves to both cities. Eventually, Alma returned to the East Coast and settled in Bergen County, New Jersey. She was employed at the Metcalf and Eddy Engineering firm in New York City, where she worked as an Office Manager and made lifelong friends.
As 1972 came to a close, she met her future husband, Frank Carpi. They have been together since New Year’s Day, 1973 and were married on February 16, 1975. This union brought Alma an only child, three stepchildren, and many siblings-in-law, as Frank is one of seven children. She cherished her expanded family, enjoying the camaraderie, visits, and delicious food that came with it.
In May 1976, Alma received her greatest gift: her dear son, Stephen. She was a devoted mother who took great care to be involved in Stephen’s life, providing him with a wide range of experiences. Celebrating birthday parties, attending the Thanksgiving Day parade, enjoying an annual Nutcracker performance, and the myriad museums NYC offered were always special occasions for the family. Through school activities, Alma connected with other mothers, forming lifelong friendships that she was grateful to have.
Family vacations often included Alma's mother, “Mama” Lucy, and her stepfather, “Pop-Pop” Jose Fuentes. Alma cherished the relationship with Mama and Pop-Pop, who also held special places in the hearts of Frank and Stephen.
Alma was well-read and intelligent, always sociable, and eager to engage anyone (even strangers) in conversation. She was a great listener, dedicating countless hours in person or on the phone to those who needed her—whether for comfort or advice. Anyone fortunate enough to have had these interactions with Alma knows how special they were.
Throughout her life, Alma faced numerous health challenges. She was a breast cancer survivor and exhibited bravery, courage, and proactivity in her fight for health. A true warrior, she was loved and appreciated, and she will be sorely missed.
Alma leaves behind her husband of fifty years, Frank; her beloved son Stephen and his wife Tricia; grandchildren Neve Aviana, Gemma Noelle, Rachel Leah, and Joseph Daniel; Stepchildren Debra, Frank, and Valerio along with his wife Danna; as well as nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
Rest in peace, dear Alma. We love you. Thank you for sharing your life with us; we are all richer for it.
