If you knew my mother and father, then you probably loved them, or at the very least, you most assuredly respected them because of who and how they were to everyone who ever had the pleasure of meeting them. My father was the originator, a founding member, and the first President of the Newark Bronze Shields, an organization established in 1959 by black policemen to improve their working conditions and to defend their rights for equal opportunities and fair treatment within the department. My mother, was the very 1st First Lady of the Newark Bronze Shields, Inc. She supported my father's sacrifice and efforts to make changes in the way that he and his fellow minority officers were treated within the NPD, by making sacrifices of her own. She opened her home to their meetings, always cooked and provided food for them, and kept my curious brother, baby sister, and me occupied and out of their way while they met in the basement of our home.
