Janae's obituary

Allyson Janae Franklet, Tlingit name is K’eiltéen, beloved daughter, sister, auntie, and friend passed away unexpectedly on November 5, 2023 at the age of 51 in Bend, Oregon after a brief battle with cancer. She is preceded in death by her father George (Gunaaneisti) Franklet in 2011. She is survived by her mother Judy (Gooxkuwadzee) Franklet (Nelson); sister Konnay (Koneil) Franklet-Irvin; brother George (Gwalt) Franklet; and many relatives and close friends.

Janae was born in Juneau on November 10, 1971 as the youngest child of George and Judy, granddaughter of Chris (Gunaaneisti) and Alice (Kuwaats) Nelson & George and Louise Franklet. She was Eagle/Wolf from the Yanyeidi Taku Tribe. She spent most of her life in Juneau and enjoyed fishing trips on the family boat, skiing, hiking, biking, gardening, cooking and baking, spoiling her dogs, and visits to Juneau’s many beaches. Janae attended Glacier Valley Elementary, Floyd Dryden Junior High, and graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1990. She participated in the JDHS Drill Team, and went on to assist coaching the JDHS Cheerleading Team in recent years. She went on to earn an associate and bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Alaska Southeast.

Janae focused her career on the legal profession, beginning her career working for the Alaska Court System, followed by the City and Borough of Juneau Attorney’s Office and the Juneau Police Department. She found her true calling once she joined Tlingit & Haida’s Tribal Child Support Unit (TCSU) in 2010 as a TCSU Specialist where she prepared cases for court and testified for purposes of establishing paternity and child support obligations. She was very passionate about supporting our cultural community, tribal members and their children. She was promoted to TCSU Manager in 2019 in recognition of her passion and excellence. In 2022, she was appointed to serve as secretary on the National Association of Tribal Child Support Directors (NATCSD), and in 2023 she was elected President of NATCSD. Her term as President was to commence in October, however her illness prevented her from serving in the role.

Janae was passionate about staying connected with her family and friends. Her enthusiasm for living life to the fullest always included others whether it was travelling for vacations or hosting meals and gatherings at her house with plenty of delicious homemade food for all. Janae relocated to Bend, Oregon in 2021 to be closer to her niece, Marleigh, daughter of George and his wife Amanda. Many trips to the beaches on the Oregon Coast were made, and the tradition of hosting gatherings at her house for games and delicious meals continued. Despite her relocation to Oregon, she maintained frequent contact with her family and friends in Alaska to keep those relationships healthy and strong.

The loss of Janae will be felt by all that knew her for the remainder of their days. Her zest for life, inimitable sense of humor, and her frequent and hearty laughter will be remembered always.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday March 23, 2024 at the Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall in Juneau from 1 to 4pm featuring the Tlingit Gospel Singers and Rev. Dr. Charles Ensminger from Kuneix Hidi Northern Light United Church.
