Allen's obituary
Allen George Merchant, 74, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on April 9, 2025, surrounded by love. He was the devoted husband of Cindy Merchant, with whom he shared 42 years of marriage.
Born on July 15, 1950, at Frederick Memorial Hospital to Ralph and Cotton (Isabel) Merchant, Allen was a lifelong son of Frederick. A proud graduate of the class of 1968, he attended Elm Street Elementary, Frederick High, and Governor Thomas Johnson High School, before earning a degree in political science from Frostburg State College—forever a proud Bobcat.
Allen dedicated much of his life to public service and his beloved hometown. He served as Administrative Assistant to Mayor Ron Young and later as a Democratic Alderman, where he played a role in facilitating the construction of Harry Grove Stadium. He was also a familiar face and partial owner at the family business, the Blue Ridge News Agency, on East Patrick Street, and later worked in retirement at NAPA Auto Parts and Younger Toyota.
Allen had many passions: music (he played in multiple bands over the years, most recently Simple Pleasure, which was a mainstay at the Frederick Elks Lodge), Maryland sports (a faithful member of the Terrapin Club), and football (a former Colts fan turned Ravens supporter, never forgetting the heartbreak when the Colts left, nor forgiving Mayberry Moving Company for their part in it). One of his proudest moments was receiving a handwritten note from Coach Bobby Ross congratulating him on the birth of his son, Tyler. His vintage red GMC van, "Old Bessie," was a fixture at tailgates across the state.
He is survived by his children, Tyler Allen Merchant (Meredith) of Baltimore, and Lindsey Merchant Goggin (Peter) of Herndon, Virginia; and his cherished grandchildren: Luke Thomas, Emma Hope, and Shepherd James Goggin, whose swim meets, dance recitals, and Nutcracker performances brought him endless joy.
Allen was a proud member of the Elks Lodge #684, a loyal participant in the FHS and TJ Class of 1968 reunion committee, and a sharp darts shooter for Cahoots. He found joy in small pleasures—ice cream from Freeze King, a good song, and the company of friends and family.
He took great pride in Frederick, in his family, and in a life well-lived. And if you listen closely, you might just hear the reunion band he’s surely organizing in the sky.
