Allan's obituary

Allan Bruce Currie, born in Sarnia, Ontario on January 29, 1947 (aged 77), passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. Allan is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Sandra (nee Gauss), his sons Andrew (Emily) Currie and Nathan (Heather) Currie and grandchildren, Eleanor (Ben Carver), Bennett, Leah, Alice and Elaina and Allan’s brother Robert and sister Marsha. He is predeceased by his parents James and Myrtle Currie.

It is impossible to capture Allan’s life in a few short paragraphs. Allan was a man larger than life and had innumerable accomplishments.

Allan was born in Sarnia, Ontario and was an entrepreneur from a young age. As a child he had a local paper route and ran a small business selling homemade pine cone Christmas ornaments. He was in marching band and won several awards playing the clarinet. Allan was an athlete that exceled at baseball and hockey. After finishing high school in Sarnia, in 1966, Allan married the love of his life Sandra Ann Gauss. Allan was happily married for 58 years.

Allan was a CPA and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan (Flint), a masters in business and tax from Walsh College and attended law school at Detroit College of Law.

Allan was a hard worker and had a career that spanned many and diverse industries including (not chronologically) driving a delivery truck, cleaning tanks at ESSO Oil, licensed builder (built several houses in Michigan and a condo in Windsor Ontario), electrical contractor (founding a family electrical business in Michigan), home remodeler, auditor for the state of Michigan, working in the automotive sector as a leading expert on esoteric tax issues for General Motors, Volkswagen, ZF, Valeo, Oxford and Tower, accounting for Feld Entertainment (of circuses and Disney on Ice fame), Lexitel and Sohio, teaching tax and business and finance classes at Central Michigan and Walsh College, running his own CPA firm with Sam McGunegle, setting up a marina in Algonac and OPT fitness centers in Oakland County.

Allan was an active hockey player (playing hockey until he was in his mid-70s) and a formidable face-off man for many local teams including Fraser, Utica, Troy, Mt. Clemens and Shelby Township and also played on tournament teams traveling in the US and Canada winning many hockey tournaments. He and Sandy would attend many hockey banquets. His love of hockey was passed to his two boys, Andy and Nathan, whom he coached for many years. He loved spending time with his five grandchildren and was involved in many of his grandchildren’s activities including many adventures like camping, snorkeling, ziplining, canoeing, kayaking and diving. He loved to play games and would play cards and board games with his grandchildren.

Allan loved to travel and he and Sandy traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, numerous Caribbean Islands, Mexico and Europe. Allan loved music and he and Sandy would play ragtime and duets at the piano and dance together at every opportunity. Allan and Sandy were life-long ticket holders for Detroit Symphony and Orchestra Hall.
