Allan's obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Allan Anthony Benincasa on May 8, 2023 at the age of 74.
Allan was deeply loved by his family, friends, and community. He is survived by his loving son Justin ("Dino") and daughter Alexandra ("Albert"); his grand daughter Olivia ("the tornado"); and his younger brother Anthony ("Tone").
He is also survived by his first wife, Suzanne Vanderbeck; his second wife, Theresa Antetomaso, whom he married in 2005 and became a wonderful step-father to Julian Antetomaso and the late Travis Donnor, and his partner Jossie Fong.
Allan was born in Philadelphia, PA to Anthony and Anne on January 16, 1949. He was raised specifically in the Roxborough/Manayunk area on the same streets that his father traversed growing up, and that his son would later call home as well. He attended local St. Joseph's University in Bala Cynwyd, PA.
Allan maintained a passion for the city and surrounding suburbs throughout his entire life. His experiences growing up would be the catalyst for the gifted storyteller that he would become. "Dad, tell us a crazy story" was a common refrain from his children well into their adulthood.
A man of many passions, Allan's love for the arts was well-known among his friends and family. He discovered rock and roll at an early age, playing guitar in bands to support himself after graduating high school. He never put the instrument down and was perpetually looking for the next jam session. His passion evolved for all things musical, ranging from Latin to classical, an appreciation that he instilled in both of his children.
After years in various bands, he later started acting, where he again found success. He had a significant stint in the local Philadelphia theater scene that lasted several years, participating in dozens of productions including several lead roles. His time spent in theater gave him a lifelong appreciation for film, television, and drama.
He also maintained a lifelong love of his Italian heritage and cuisine that he deeply enjoyed spreading amongst his family and friends. He was a regular at many of the city's best restaurants and anyone close with him was likely a guest at his table at least once if not countless times. He developed a refined pallet for red wine, and made several trips to the motherland that were some of his most cherished experiences.
In his 20's, Allan went to work for his father's company, PM Associates, as premium auditor. He quickly excelled in this position. His role in the company steadily increased until he eventually became President. Under his leadership, the company's main focus became elevator inspections and consulting, and what started as a 1-man operation became a successful small business that would last for 20+ years under his leadership.
Allan married Suzanne Vanderbeck in 1979. Together they became proud parents to Justin on February 29, 1984 and then again to Alexandra on November 15th, 1987, who both loved him dearly. His devotion was unmatched and he created countless cherished memories over the years. He taught them resilience and supported their chosen paths in life, never forgetting to make them laugh every step of the way, even during the tough times.
His life was guided by the principle to never give up and always strive for success, a lesson that left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. In his late 60's, he started a new venture in the elevator industry that had steadily grown and was poised for further success at the time of his passing.
Those who were fortunate enough to know him will remember his passion, sense of humor, intelligence, entrepreneurial spirit, and appreciation for humanity. If he liked you, he made it clear, and those fortunate enough to include themselves in that circle will miss him dearly.
Allan Benincasa's memory will live on through his family and the countless lives he touched during his time on earth. His spirit and wisdom will be carried on by those he touched, and his zest for life will be celebrated and remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
