Alfred's obituary

Alfred David Woodall, Jr., affectionately known as Junior, and Woody, was born on July 22, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Alfred David Woodall, Sr. and Rosa Mae (Hill) Woodall. The eldest of eight children, he moved with his family to Brooklyn, NY in 1934, where they lived in the communities of Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and finally Crown Heights.

Alfred attended NYC Public Schools, graduating from Boys High School (now Boys and Girls High School) with an academic diploma, where he also mastered hobbies like wood carving and auto repairs. He enjoyed stick ball, football, roller and ice skating, bowling, dancing, and double-deck pinochle. Ever the athlete, he often talked about the corner drugstore, aka the boys' hangout, where he and his friends would meet daily to decide what sport they would play for the day.

He joined the National Guard in 1949, and from 1950 to 1954, served as a mechanic and driver in the United States Marine Corp in Seoul, Korea during the Korean Conflict. His driving expertise led him to become one of the first African Americans hired with the Surface Line Division of the NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority in1956, where he worked for 26 years before retiring.

His best friends, Charles Sawyer and Albert Green, and their wives Jean Sawyer and Bernice Green, introduced “Woody” to Audrey Gladys Thompson whom he married in 1956. To this union they raised four children in Hempstead, Long Island, NY: Craig Kevin, Donna Lynn, Alfred David III, and Brian Scot.

Always the hobbyist, he coached and umpired Nassau County Little League baseball. He also loved playing the guitar into the wee hours of the morning and encouraged all his children to take up an instrument. During this time, Alfred was baptized at Unity Temple Baptist Church in Brooklyn, finally joining his parents who were among its founders. Following his divorce he moved back to Brooklyn where he worked at Snyder Bowl for a couple of years furthering his fondness for bowling.

In 1984 Alfred married Doris Tillman, with whom he had daughter, Alexis Tiffane. Soon they would move to Atlanta, GA where he continued his love of bowling, winning several trophies for perfect three hundred score games. He also resumed his love of driving at National Car Rental at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. Retiring once more, he spent his leisure time as an usher for the Atlanta Braves Organization, but never losing his fandom of the NY Yankees. During his retirement, he enjoyed many nights playing spades online with his son Alfred, III. It was also at this time he enthusiastically researched and catalogued the Woodall (father) and Hill (mother) family trees.

After thirty-one years in Atlanta, health challenges brought Alfred back to New York in 2015, where he remained under the loving care of his children until he gained his wings on December 6, 2023.

Alfred is survived by his sons Craig K Woodall, Alfred D Woodall III, Brian S Woodall, and daughters Donna L Woodall and Alexis T Woodall Cook; his sister Rosamae Deloatch; daughters-in-law Debora Woodall and Yolanda Woodall; son-in-law Robert Cook; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Alfred D. Woodall, Sr. and Rosa Mae Woodall, son Damon Keith Woodall, sisters Delores and Ellabella, brothers Benjamin and Oscar, twins Gerald and Geraldine, and wife Doris Tillman Woodall. His name and legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
