Alfred's obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Alfred Alan Drew; CPO,USN 0f Fayetteville, Georgia, born in Easton, Massachusetts on July9, 1925, the last of five children. His parents, Roy and Lillian Drew are predeceased, as are his brothers, Harry Drew and Roy Drew; and sisters, Helen Drew. and Myra Tillinghast. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen Drew and his grandson, Michael Alan Ehrlich.

Alfred passed away on April 11, 2018, at the age of 92, leaving to mourn his wife of 74 years, Eleanor Cox Drew, his daughter, Patricia Drew Houlihan and her husband, John; his grandsons, Gregory and wife Susan Ehrlich of Buckhead, and Mark Ehrlich of Florida; his granddaughters Kelly Houlihan Geronimos and husband Daniel of McDonough, and Kathryn Houlihan of Jonesboro.. He also left five great grandchildren, Brenden Ehrlich of Florida, Devin Thompson of Northlake, Georgia and Sean, Christopher, and Olivia Geronimos; all of McDonough, Georgia.

Alfred enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 before graduating from Oliver Ames High School in 1942. He received his diploma as he finished bootcamp. He was stationed in California for a year. At the end of the year, he proposed to his girl, Eleanor Cox Drew over the phone. He arrived home on the day of the wedding. They were married and in love for 74 years. He was a very loving and devoted husband. He proudly served in the Navy from 1942 -1951, then reenlisted after 5 years, until he retired in 1967, serving a total of 20 years. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He served honorably and received several commendations for good conduct. He also received recognitions from several officers commending him for his excellent service.

After he retired, he became a carpenter and built houses including helping build his daughter and son in laws house, He created several beautiful pieces of furniture, as well. He loved to work with his hands,

His favorite thing in the world was taking rides. He would drive hours just to get an ice cream cone. He once said as long as he had his redhead (Eleanor) next to him, he could drive forever.

He was a wonderful and loving husband and father and was absolutely adored by all.

A graveside service presided over by Father Brad Metz will be held on May 26th at Furnace Village Cemetery in Easton, Massachusetts at 10 am. He will also be honored by the military.  He will be buried with his family there.
