Aldona's obituary

Aldona Cross (nee Nakrosius), of Matteson, IL and more recently Scottsdale, AZ, passed away Thursday, January 17th, 2019 at the age of 94. Aldona, the only child of Lithuanian immigrants, was preceded in death by her parents Petronella (nee Labeikis) and John (Jonas) Nakrosius, her husband Frederick Cross, husbands Michael Bordas (father of her daughter Diana (James) Jamrog of Livonia MI and son Allen (Rebecca) Bordas of Indianapolis, IN) and William Older (father of her daughter Karen (Al) Grosser of Scottsdale, AZ) and grandson Richard Jamrog. In addition to her children, Aldona is survived by 6 grandchildren - James R (Cathy) Jamrog , Donna (Eric) Smatana, Marci (Trip) Bonds, Michael (Kristen) Meliska, Gregory Meliska, Angela Meliska and 13 great-grandchildren - Blase, Lauren, Laura, Annie, Kylie, Keilyn, Caden, Kennedy, Cheyenne, Jaxon, Connor, Ryan, and Khloe.

Born in East Chicago, IN, Aldona moved to the West Pullman neighborhood on Chicago's far south side in 1926 where her parent's established a small neighborhood store. Aldona attended SS Peter and Paul grade school and went on to attend St Casimir academy until her marriage in 1940. She remained in West Pullman until 1979, and spent several years living in Midlothian, IL until she moved to Timber Ridge in Matteson, IL. Prior to her retirement in 1989, she had worked for CNA Insurance for nearly three decades, and went on to enjoy being a member of numerous senior groups, as well as volunteering at Olympia Fields Osteopathic Medical Center. She enjoyed many activities during her retirement - from playing cards and bingo, to being an avid Scrabble player. She loved nature and you would often find her gazing out her window at the flowers in her garden and the birds she loved to feed. In 2015, she turned a page in her story and embarked on a move to Arizona for the warmer weather. She became a much beloved member of the community at Desert Flower Assisted Living in Scottsdale, where she served on the resident council, representing her neighbors and bringing awareness to management of the changing needs of the community. She remained there until a bout of pneumonia initiated a hospitalization which was the beginning of a downward spiral due to numerous health issues.

She passed peacefully on the evening of Thursday, January 17, 2019, under the care of Wings of Hope Hospice... and she will be greatly missed.
