Albert's obituary
Albert F. Byrnes Jr – Al as he was known to his friends, “Uncle Al” to close family, and “Uncle Booyah” to nieces and nephews as they grew up - passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Monday, January 8, 2024. He was born on October 6, 1956 to Albert (Sr) and Kathleen (Tuohy) Byrnes in Medford MA. He grew up in Arlington, and W. Peabody MA and summered in Little Neck, Ipswich MA. He graduated from St John’s Prep High School ’74 and Merrimack College ‘79.
Al went on to use his education as an accountant and controller for various businesses. Most recently he worked for TUV USA in Salem, NH. He had also worked for Amco in Hooksett, NH, and Bonfatti Construction in Stoneham MA.
Al lived in Exeter, NH for over 2 decades and took care of his mother prior to her passing in 2022. He leaves behind 2 sisters, Joanne Burke (and her husband Nelson) of Salem, MA, and Charlotte Tullgren (and her husband Eric) of North Andover, MA. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews Kristen (Burke) Nikitas (and her husband Ryan), Cody Burke, Stephen Tullgren, and Jennifer Tullgren. He was the great uncle to the Nikitas children, Riley, Emmy and Landyn. Al was a very caring and loving son, brother, uncle and great uncle to all. He always made time for his family and would attend as many of his nieces’ and nephews’ youth sports games as possible, bringing their grandmother with him to cheer them on.
Al also touched the lives of many good friends and neighbors over the years. His passions were numerous, but he was particularly known for engaging in interesting conversations about sports, politics, or suggesting a great book he had recently finished. He also enjoyed catching up with old friends over dinner. He loved playing hockey throughout his life, and that passion never waned as he even participated (and won the championship once) in his “Over 40 League” in Dover NH. He was an avid Boston sports fan across the board, but he had also followed college hockey and was able to attend a few Frozen Four championship games. After moving to NH he became a huge UNH Hockey and Football fan. His affinity for Bruce Springsteen was also a hallmark, and he attended more shows than he could count. Being active was important to him. We remember him organizing fun family street hockey games with Jimmy Caruso, who was like a brother to him, (his wife Nancy and their 2 children Michael and Kaitlyn). Later in life he took up walking the local trails with family and stopping to talk with people along the way.
Al was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by many.
A celebration of his life will be held at a future date.
Donations can be made in his memory to the NHSPCA, from where he adopted quite a few of his beloved cats.
