My late spouse, Mike Carew, and I met Alan when he and our son, Michael, were roommates and members of the football team at TLC.  In recent years, Alan would come over to help lift my husband up off the floor due to a fall caused by ALS.   He was always willing to help us.   However, over the years he had this habit of teasing our dogs.   One actually ran away the same day and never returned.    Alan always laughed and he was just being Alan.   We forgave him.  Alan always claimed he was going to invite me to join them at Bingo.    He never did because I had winning bingo record and he didn’t.   True story.    He was a lovable guy.  I already miss him.  RIP, Alan!

Alan was one of the first friends I had when I moved to Hondo in 1976.  We were all part of the same neighborhood kids that ran around together, played football in the street, and just generally had fun.  I sure miss those simple times.  Alan was always the one to have a light-hearted attitude about everything we did, never being too upset, or grumbling about anything.  He was a good-natured man with a heart of gold that just seemed to go with the flow.  I'm sorry we lost touch over the years after graduation, but I will always cherish those memories on 25th Street with Alan. God blessed us with a good man.  Condolences to the Witte Family.
So sad to lose dear friend Alan.  We spent so many formative years growing up together at Saint Paul Lutheran, the six of us confirmation students often goofing off when Pastor Braun wasn’t looking. We spent many weekends playing youth league softball, and also traveling all over the state with our puppet ministry! Ha,  one of my favorite puppet skits was a lighthearted rendition of The Lion Sleeps Tonight. I admired Alan’s fortitude as he held a heavy lion muppet head up while he stood behind the rose colored curtain with his lion hand swatting the swirling bumble bee on a string as he tried to sleep, and the rest of the cast of muppets sang “a-wee-ma-wop.”   Sleep well now, mighty lion.

Coach Witte taught me to be a man. I’ll forever be thankful for his time he spent with me. My name is on the wall at Marshall because of this man.
