Alan's obituary
Alan Russell Cowart , 74, of New Braunfels, Texas, passed away on March 27, 2026, after a brief illness, surrounded by family. Alan didn’t measure his life by accomplishments, but by people—the grandchildren who climbed onto his lap to hear a story, the friends he kept close no matter the distance , and by his children who always knew they could count on him for a listening ear, steady advice, or a helping hand.
Born March 7, 1952 in Harlingen, Texas, Alan was a proud Texan. He grew up and spent much of his early life in Bryan, forming friendships that lasted a lifetime. Alan owned Cowart Jewelry and M&M Video, and later found his way into millwork and door sales, traveling throughout the southern United States. Wherever he went, Alan made friends easily—often over a round of golf, a fishing trip, or time spent outdoors doing what he loved.
But more than anything, Alan will be remembered by the moments shared with others—family gathered around the kitchen table or a campfire. There was always room for one more, always a story and laughter where everyone felt comfortable, welcomed and valued. His humor, loyalty and kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
At the center of his life was his wife, Susan, of nearly 28 years—his partner, his travel companion, and the love of his life. Together they shared countless adventures, deep love for their dogs, and a bond that was evident to all.
His legacy lives on in his children: Chris Cowart (Mimosa) of Katy, Russell Cowart (Lisa) of Conroe, Jennifer Watson of Bryan, Megan Van Dusen (Darin) of Garden Ridge, and Steven Watson (Amber) of New Braunfels.
He was a proud Papa and his grandchildren will forever carry memories of his playful spirit and warm hugs: Dillon Cowart, Serena, Ella, Sam, Nate, Caleb and Max Van Dusen, Brayden and Cameron Cowart and Olivia, Charlotte and Levi Watson, Daniel and Sara Vasquez, Christian, Miryssa and Aiden Flores. He was also blessed with great grandchildren: Serenity Gonzalez, Miguel Chandler and Josiah Puente and MJ Escobedo. Alan is survived by his brother, Wallace “Buddy” Cowart, sister, Lana Cangelose, (Lary) and many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Nina Cowart and his infant son, Kevin.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 11 at 2pm at Gruene United Methodist Church
