Agnes's obituary
Agnes Helen Hess, a devoted community servant and passionate advocate for philanthropy, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, in Pasadena, California, at the age of 84.
Born on December 15, 1940, in Benson, MN, Agnes was the daughter of Christian and Eileen Schwappach. She was preceded in her death by her parents, her brothers John, David, Paul and her sister Mary. She is survived by her sister Gretchen, her daughter Christina and her 2 beloved cats, who brought her great comfort and joy.
For over four decades, Agnes dedicated her career to the non-profit sector in Los Angeles County, where her warmth, dedication and tireless work ethic touched countless lives. She served for many years in Development at the Natural History Museum of LA County, where she skillfully raised funds and orchestrated elegant donor events. Later, she took on the role of Director of Development at the Banning Museum in Wilmington, where she continued to blend her passion for history, education and community engagement. Agnes concluded her distinguished career at the California Community Foundation, where her leadership in philanthropy made a lasting impact.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Agnes was known for her kindness, generosity and love for others. She adored her neighbors and always had a smile to share. She had a lifelong love for animals and rescued many cats and dogs, and took great joy in their companionship. She delighted in touring Pasadena and South Pasadena, admiring the beautiful homes, and sharing stories of the many friendships she cultivated there over the years.
Agnes lived her life with purpose, grace and a genuine desire to make the world a better place. Her dedication to her community, her family and her friends will be remembered and treasured by all who knew her.
A private service will be held by the family, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Agnes’ memory to The Arbor Foundation.
