Adria's obituary

Adria Wight died at Methodist University Hospital on May 15, 2018 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was 86 years old.

Adria is survived by daughters Wendy Shelia Wight and N. Beryl Wight; her daughter-in-law Sarah Lynn Tune; her sister Evelyn Shurtleff, her brother Walter Burrill, and her best friend P.J. Bennett. She is preceded in death by her husband C. Calvin Wight and her siblings Donald, Albert, Vincent, Prince, Calvin, Vera, Byron, Floyd, Pearl, Beulah, Carleton, Dale, and David.

Adria was born in Lincoln, Maine to Bernice Ella Fogg Burrill and Stephen Penn Burrill. She graduated from the Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston, Maine in 1947. In the school yearbook, she listed her ambition to be “a school marm.” She had jobs caring for children and later became a licensed practical nurse. She lived in several cities before moving to Cleveland, Ohio. In 1959, Adria married Calvin, an electrical engineer, at the West Shore Unitarian Church. She and Calvin lived in Lakewood, Ohio and raised Beryl and Wendy.

Adria loved astrology, tarot, and numerology. She practiced yoga, was a long-time vegan, and identified as a Humanist. She was not afraid to talk about religion or politics. When living in Cleveland, she served as a poll worker on election days. She and her daughter Wendy enjoyed visiting natural history and space-related museums and attractions.

Adria decided several years ago to donate her body to the Medical Education & Research Institute (MERI). A memorial service will be held on her eighty seventh birthday, July 8, 2018 at 3PM at the First Unitarian Church of Memphis (the Church on the River) . Donations in her memory can be sent to Planned Parenthood or the Memphis Child Advocacy Center. The family would like to thank Sheri Rayborn, Faye Brown, and the other caregivers from Home Instead for their kind companionship.
