Abelardo's obituary
Abelardo Alvarez Valenzuela Jr, 84, passed away on May 1, 2023 in Portland, ME, USA. He was born on December 29, 1938 in Caloocan City, Philippines to Petra and Abelardo Valenzuela, Sr. , both deceased. He was the fifth child out of nine children.
Abe, his American nickname, was survived by Luningning, his loving wife of 66 years. He was a very good provider and was a devoted father to his daughters Grace Valenzuela of Cumberland, Maine; Marilou Javier of Malabon City, Philippines; Divina Valenzuela of Paranaque City, Philippines; Cecilia Ariza and Mary Jane Valenzuela of Portland, Maine; and son Percival of Norfolk, Virginia. He was a doting grandfather to his 12 grandchildren five of whom are in the Philippines: Joseph Ryan, Jiselle Camille, Jeremy Michael, Julienne Shay, and John Lloyd; and seven are in the United States: Elizabeth Virginia, Cedrick Paul, Joyce Carla, James Carlo, Roderick, Yara Samantha, and Yamileth Phoebe; and 2 great-grandchildren in Portland, Maine: Celina Rebecca and Jayce Kai. Abe gave all his grandchildren and great grandchildren unique nicknames as terms of endearment.
Abe was a high school graduate of Far Eastern University. He worked as a machine operator at Standard Can Company for 15 years. When the company closed, he used his severance pay to buy a passenger Jeepney and drove it for a few years before selling it. He then managed a fleet of Jeepneys for a friend. He immigrated to Portland in 1989 and first worked at Holiday Inn. Abe retired in 2008 from working as a Custodial Staff at Maine Medical Center for 15 years.
Abe was known for his sense of humor, intelligence, and perfectionism. In his free time, Abelardo enjoyed playing and watching basketball, listening to music, watching game shows, and solving crossword puzzles. He was also an avid Mahjong player, a formidable scrabble player, and a fixer of all things broken.
He is survived by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his siblings Ben Valenzuela of Quezon City, Philippines, Ray Valenzuela of Sydney, Australia, Lita Cruz of Tanay Rizal, Philippines, and Yoly MacMillen of London, England. He was predeceased by his brothers, Eddie and Nini Valenzuela, and sisters, Vita Berango, and Josefina Lorenzo.
A Liturgy of the Word will be held on Thursday, May 4th, 2023 at 4:00pm at A. T. Hutchins Funeral Home at 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland, Maine. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 13th at 12:30pm at 29 Sunnyfield Lane, Cumberland, Maine. Abe will be deeply missed by his family and all those who knew him.
