Abel's obituary
Abel Gaytan, 84, of Austin, Texas, passed away on November 10, 2024.
Abel Estrada Gaytan was the fifth of ten children born to Elias Gaytan and Modesta Estrada Gaytan. Born in Nixon, Texas, he graduated from Nixon High School in 1960, as class salutatorian. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1964, from Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos.
Abel moved to San Francisco, California in 1967. He enjoyed the energy and beauty of the City and California as a whole. Some of his favorite aspects there were the Botanical Gardens at Golden Gate Park, the Mission District, the Giants baseball team, the symphony, and the various book stores. He was an avid reader throughout his entire life. He was a US Postal employee for twenty five years.
Abel was kind, gentle and adventurous. He enjoyed visiting Zihuatanejo, Mexico, on many occasions and often stayed for several months at a time, and he explored other parts of the US, South America and Europe.
In 2018, due to the onset of dementia, Abel settled in with his youngest brother, Oscar, and in 2020, he moved to assisted living facilities, first in San Marcos and later in Austin, Texas where he still enjoyed his books and watching baseball on TV.
Abel was preceded in death by his parents, Elias and Modesta, brother Eluterio, and sisters Lucia and Paz. He is survived by brothers Lee, George, Rudy, Ruben and Oscar, and sister Viola. The family will have a private burial at the Latin American Cemetery in Nixon, Texas.
