Vicki and family,

I am saddened to learn of Bill's passing. He was my law mentor and partner for 20+ years. Bill was a brilliant lawyer of steely determination for his clients. He taught me much about our profession, life's lessons and love of family. I am grateful. As Bill has been over these past several years, you are in my thoughts for "To weep is to make less the depth of grief."

.

My sincerest condolences,

Ken Pierce

I’ve been so heartbroken about Bill’s passing. It’s hard to express how important he was to our family and especially my Dad. Bill was witty, funny and had a laugh that was contagious. He was so smart and full of information about so many things from gardening to architecture, to art, and of course current events. He was welcoming to all and a consummate host. The lake was his happy place and I picture him on the porch reading his newspaper or sitting in the Adirondack chairs in the back enjoying the sun (and pointing out the weeds that needed to come up). I love the sunsets at Walloon and Bill would assure me nightly that it would be a “good one” no matter what. And he was right. They do not disappoint. Sending my condolences to all those that love him. Hillary

We are extremely sad about the loss of Bill.   He was an intregal part of my childhood and adult life.  When I married, my husband Alan and our daughter were both lovingly brought into the family fold.  We had so many happy memories and fun times.  We enjoyed vacations, relaxing at the lake and spending time in each other's company.  Bill's sense of humor and wonderful laugh are unforgettable.  He was smart, kind and the ultimate host. Our lives are richer for having known him.  Heather, Alan and Harper

DearVicky and Bill's family,

I am deeply saddened by Bill's passing. Bill was an excellent lawyer and a funny, kind and respectful colleague. I am forever grateful for his mentorship. May Bill rest in peace.

These are wonderful photos of Bill and his enjoyment of family, friends, purpose-driven work, and travel. I value the time I had with Bill in D.C., glorious Walloon Lake, and even tagging along with Erin on one of Bill's many work trips to Vietnam. His deep love of family always came through, alongside his sharp intellect, humor, and generosity. Love to Vicki, Erin, Daniel, and all who knew Bill well.
Fond college memories of Bill, lounging in the Huntley-Brinkley TV room at our college fraternity at Brown University, sharing great wisdom and good humor. Will never forget Bill.

Dear Vicki, and all of Bill's family,

I send you all my love and sympathy as you navigate life forward with Bill in heaven rather than this mortal plane.   He was/is one of a kind.  He mentored me as a young attorney, and helped shaped my career, as he did for the father of my children, and so many others who have been important in my life.    His legal mind was brilliant, but it was his wisdom, which he shared unceasingly, that absolutely changed every aspect of my life for the better.   I loved him. I love him.  A giant among men, and the best laugh ever.

All my love,

Valerie Ellis

Dear Vicki, Erin, Daniel, and everyone else  among Bill's family,

I'm so sorry to hear of Bill's passing.  He was a central figure in my development as a trade lawyer.  I cherish my memories of the many years we worked together at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, the opportunities he provided me to work on some of the largest trade disputes of the last 30 years, the multiple trips we took together to Asia and Brazil, and the collaborative work we performed together over many years for our clients in Vietnam.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Bill's passing.  He has always been one of my favorite people in life, even though we lost touch over the past decades.

Bill was my cousin Sean Mitchell's sophomore roommate at Brown, so I met him when I arrived to start my freshman year, and then we both ended up at Georgetown Law School.  Bill was worldly (even at 18!) and super-smart, with a wry/insightful sense of humor that often made me fall-down laughing, and sometimes gave me perspective in viewing things I found difficult.

Thx to everyone who posted the wonderful pix...even though they made me shed more than a couple tears.

My most profound condolences to Vicki, their family, and Bill's many friends & colleagues.

We would like to express our condolences on Bill’s passing away to his great wife and his family.

For more than 20 years from the first day we started having Bill as our counsel, we had been grateful and treasured Bill for his excellence works, his dedication to help and his great talent. He had done a good job and cared for our business until the end. For us, Bill was more than our counsel, he was a good friend and the person we can trust and rely on.

Bill’s passing away is a big loss for not only his family but also for us, his friend and clients. But we all know Bill had lived a good life, with full of joys, happiness and he had done things that he loved and wanted to and was loved and admired by his family, friends and partners. We knew that his lovely wife and family were there for him always and until the end.

Bill, please rest in peace and we all will keep good memory of you always.

As a Wallooner Bill has touched so many hearts up and down the beach and his presence definitely will be missed as well as his is laughter and  quick wit. My family and I send love to all. Oh so thankful for memories!
Laura and I are greatly saddened to learn of Bill's passing. We take heart in seeing the many joyful candid shots you've posted reflecting all those around Bill who loved and cherished him. Although we were not together often, it was always a pleasure whenever we managed spend time with Bill.  We felt privileged to know such an accomplished and remarkably modest man. We send heartfelt condolences to all of his extended family.
