William (Bill)'s obituary

William (Bill) Fuher, 83, of Santa Barbara, CA, passed away on December 01, 2022.

Bill was born August 25, 1939, to Frank William Fuher and Bernice (Thomason) Fuher in Spokane, WA and grew up in Livingston, MT. After graduating from Park County High School in 1957, he served in the United States Air Force as an Aircraft Control and Warning Systems (AC&W) Operator from 1957 to 1961. Upon completion of Basic Training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio TX, and technical training at Keesler AFB, Biloxi MS, he was stationed in Cutbank, MT, then Lewistown, MT, and finally at Indian Mountain Air Force Station, Alaska. While stationed in Lewistown, he met Judy (Peccia) Fuher, his wife of 62 years.

Bill and Judy wed in April of 1961 in Lewistown, MT. After the birth of their daughter Tammy in 1962, they made their way to Santa Barbara, CA. That same year, Bill joined the FAA and attended Air Traffic Control school in Oklahoma City, OK. He graduated as an FAA Air Traffic Controller with his first assignment being Palmdale, CA. After a short time there, Bill and Judy decided they preferred to live in Santa Barbara where Bill began a new career in the insurance industry with Metropolitan Insurance, and quickly became a sales manager. In 1964, the family expanded with the addition of son Craig William. Bill later opened his own insurance agency with Farmers Insurance in 1973 and built that business until retirement in 1999.

From a young age Bill was an avid sports fan. He was passionate about his love for the Atlanta Braves. This was his team beginning in 1948 (Boston Braves) and therefore the family’s team.  His enthusiasm for the team was contagious! So much so that his family members and many friends have been effectively “Brave Washed”.  Along with following the Braves, Bill and Judy could often be found in the stands cheering on the San Marcos High School Royals and Westmont College Warriors basketball teams. Bill also cherished his time spent coaching his son’s baseball and basketball teams at the Goleta Boys Club.

Bill was extremely proud of his family and was always there to support them. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren watching them grow and develop their passions.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, William Frank Fuher and his mother Bernice (Thomason) Fuher, brothers Jim Fuher (Helen, Margaret), Tom Fuher (Jackie), and sister Carol Ann Henson (Claude). He is survived by his wife Judy Fuher, daughter Tammy (Fuher) O’Brien (Greg), son Craig Fuher (Jenifer), grandchildren Tara (Logan) Anderson (Eric), William R. Fuher, Ashley O’Brien, Aubree Fuher, great-grandchildren Logan Anderson, Presley Anderson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
