Graduation photo from the 1969 yearbook of FDR High School. Val was far more than just a friend—he was my brother in every sense of the word, a constant presence by my side since the 6th grade. Together, we navigated the halls of PS 230, Montauk JHS, and FDR, forging an unbreakable bond amid the turbulent racial times of the 60s. That shared experience became the foundation of a lifelong relationship built on resilience, trust, and deep mutual respect. Growing up in BedStuy and journeying to school in Bensonhurst from an early age, we faced challenges that would have tested many, but for us, they only strengthened our connection. Our conversations were always illuminating, filled with wisdom, laughter, and a sense of hope for the future. I have always admired Val’s remarkable ability to solve problems and strategize, qualities that inspired everyone around him. The love and joy he brought to my life are immeasurable, and his spirit will continue to uplift me for the rest of my days.
