This is such very sad news. I have followed Steven and the NhRP charity from the start and donate regularly as I consider your work to be so important in progressing animal rights. We have nothing similar in the UK. Thank you Steven for having this vision, for your great successes and for ensuring your legacy work will continue with the rest of the NhRP team.
I didn't know Steven Wise but I understand the significance of his dedication and accomplishments and send my sincere condolences and blessings to his loved ones. We need more people like him in the world.
Very sad to learn of the passing of animal rights attorney Steve Wise. We met in 1981 in the US and our paths crossed with CEASE, NEAVS, ALDF, and the Nonhuman Rights Project. Professionally an inspiration. Personally a friend.
I am heartbroken. We have lost a warrior. I met Steve a couple of times and his commitment and upbeat attitude was infectious, and he is what garnered my commitment to this mission and organization. We will continue with dedication in his honor. No doubt he will be watching and guiding our progress.
Steve was a pioneer who refused to be thwarted by setbacks and soldiered on in the cause of recognition for other-than-human beings. I am happy in the knowledge that he inspired others to get on with it and DO something, anything that you believe in that will make a better world. All of us at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wish those who loved and respected him strength in loss and happy memories.
I met Steven and heard him speak at a gathering of animal rights advocates in California a decade ago. I was stunned by the quiet power of his presentation. His logic was unassailable and the Truth Force of his words stays with me. He was a persuasive warrior against what the Pope has called "tyrannical anthropocentrism." Steven Wise showed us a path toward overcoming that unethical, unfeeling self-blindedness. He will remain a beacon in this struggle. Steven knew that his insights and legal vision would in time prevail. When his wisdom is the common view of humanity, which will come, his name will be blessed. His memory is a blessing.
That is soooo sad! He was such a powerhouse in CREATING change for captive animals! He will be deeply missed. THE WORLD NEEDS MORE STEVE WISE'S. MAY HIS LEGACY CONTINUE, EVEN STRONGER THAN BEFORE.
I never met Steven, but from the moment I learned of the NhRP, I knew this was the most important work of our age. Through my readings and watching, my own hopelessness was healed by knowing that there are good, intelligent people working for the light; that none of us are free until we are ALL free. I am endlessly grateful that Steven was in our world, making it better.
I did not know Mr. Wise personally but his work has felt very meaningful to me, putting powerful thought and action behind a perspective I hold dearly: than non-human animals have every right to their freedom and fulfillment that we do. His mission will carry forth and ripple out exponentially as a testament to what a special and impactful man he was (and will continue to be through all of us supporting that mission). Rest in peace and power Mr. Wise--all of the animals walk with you.
A loss beyond measure to the animals for whom he so passionately fought and to all the humans he educated, elevated, enlisted in a most righteous cause, his life's devotion. A true animal hero, an iconic warrior, may his legacy be our relentless motivation to achieve these goals.
My heartfelt condolences to Steven Wise's family, friends, and colleagues. I'm a religious studies professor at Barnard College who works in the area of animal studies and Jewish studies and have long admired Steven Wise's pioneering intellectual and legal work. His passing is a great loss to all humans and other animals.
Steve taught me so much about the law and his vision for recognition of legal rights for animals. He was a thoughtful patient teacher and friend, who I admired greatly. The animals lost a true friend and a powerful legal advocate, and I and other animal advocates lost a guiding light for our movement.
