Sending my most heartfelt condolences to Steve’s family, this is such heartbreaking news. Steve will always be one of my greatest heroes.
I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that Steve did more for the protection of consciousness, and future of consciousnesses, than anyone who has ever lived.
My favorite people in all of history share an unwavering commitment to the investigation of the Universe, with awe and curiosity, and they inevitably direct themselves to isolating root-causes of suffering, and forging long-term strategies towards their dismantling. I can say without hyperbole, that I view Steve as the most shining example of this in the history of civilization.
Steve is the patron saint of heroes, rightly insisting that justice has no boundaries, and no exceptions. A fierce protector of all consciousness, with an eye towards countless generations yet to be born
Sending profound gratitude, and all of my love to Steve’s family and friends
May all beings be free

Rest in Peace, dear Steve, my very dear friend and mentor. You will always stay close in my heart. I owe my path in animal law and animal rights to you. How fortunate I was to meet you way back when at the start of your path in animal law. So much encouragement and wisdom you gave me for so long. But most of all I cherish our true and lasting friendship. I am just feeling deep grief right now, and send my heart-felt sympathy to Steve's dear Gail and the whole family.

My sincerest condolences to his family, friends, followers and volunteers with the NHRP. He was a brilliant advocate for nonhuman sentience and the rights they deserve. I never had the opportunity to meet him in person. Perhaps in another lifetime.

Steve was a force for good in this world, and words cannot express the depth of this loss. His passionate dedication to advancing legal rights for nonhuman animals made a remarkable difference in countless lives. His unwavering belief in justice and determination to reform a system that overlooks the fundamental rights of animals were truly inspiring. Steve's intelligence, warmth, and unwavering spirit touched us all. Though this loss is profound, the impact of his work, and that of the NhRP, will continue to shape the future for generations to come. Steve, thank you for your brilliance, compassion, and decades of fighting for those who do not have a voice. You will be deeply missed.

Steve Wise was a giant in law and theory and also in the practice of care for animals. With towering intelligence and undaunted courage, he dedicated his life to the cause of animal rights. He and I often argued about the best theoretical strategies, and criticized one another, but let that not diminish the enduring collegial friendship that connected us and my huge admiration for all of his life and for the Nonhuman Rights Project. I am so sad to hear of his premature death, and I send my sympathy to his family and all his associates, who are boldly continuing his work.
