I first met Olav when I started working in Odfjell in 2010 in Bergen, Norway. Olav was my Manager and Mentor. Olav was patient, always in a good mood, had a good sense of humor, and he gave me the support and the best possible start I could have in my career. I really enjoyed working with Olav, and was looking forward to be working more closely with him again when I moved to Houston. Sadly we did not get much time here before the tragic accident. I will be forever grateful, and always remember Olav with a smile.

My deepest condolences to Kumi for the sudden loss of her beloved husband Olav Henning.
He was my nephew, the first in our family.
He was the sweetest little boy with such a gentle way about him. The best little guy and kind to everyone. We used to take the ferry to his grandparents and he always wanted peanuts - a rare treat in Norway in the 60’s - and he was so excited on these trips.
When he was a teenager he used to babysit my three children and he was so good to them, playing, reading comics and making them laugh.
We were so proud of the man he became and will always keep him in our hearts, never forgotten and always missed.

I had the pleasure of working with Olav closely for a number of years and he will be greatly missed. He was a true professional, someone who others looked up to and enjoyed interacting with each day. He was one of the best at solving challenges in our shipping industry and coming up with solutions that could bridge the gap between two parties. His wit and great sense of humor were one of his best gifts. I send my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I have worked with Olav since starting my career in the chemical tanker industry in 2011 in Bergen.We both moved to Houston around the same time and developed a close working relationship and friendship throughout the years.Olav stood out from his peers in his way of working through his broad understanding of the markets, always respectful to his counterparts, with fast decision making when required and always in a good mood.On a personal level I will miss his stories, jokes and laughter.

かなしくてさびしくて、かなしくてくやしくて、心にポッカリと穴があいています。
思い出すのはOlavさんのやさしい笑顔ばかり、あの穏やかで慈愛に満ちていて誰をも包みこんでくれるような笑顔と不思議な温かさを持った人柄は決して忘れられるものではありません。
まったく英語の話せないボクの語力をまるで赤ちゃんをあやすように理解してくれた唯一無二の異国の友でもありました。そしてまさかのノルウェージャン。
ノルウェーといえば男も女も厳しい自然の中、荒れ狂う大海原に勇猛果敢に挑み大きな骨付きの肉塊にかぶり付きながら金銀のゴブレットでワインをがぶ飲みする筋骨隆々の人たちだと思っていたんだけれど、あにはからんや大きな背中と長身はその通りだったけど、実際は、魚といえば鱈の塩茹でだけでたっぷりのマッシュポテトにトーストが大好きで口から火を吹くアクアビットをショット飲みするということを知ったのがおよそ30年前。
ノルウェーの人と友だちになれるなんて夢にも思っていなかったからボクの中ではOlavさん=ノルウェーで、ノルウェー=Olavさんのように"みんなやさしくていい人"ってことになっちゃっているので、国際試合でノルウェーが闘っていたりすると自然とノルウェー贔屓で応援している自分がいます。
久実ちゃんやOlavさんの妹さん、弟さんの悲しみに比べたら足元にも及ばないだろうけど、それでも・・・

In June, I had the opportunity to visit Houston for the first time, and during my trip, I had the pleasure of meeting Olav at the office. Olav was an incredibly delightful and kind individual. He showed friendliness, and I felt a genuine warm welcome from him. It is with profound sadness that I learned about his passing, and his absence will be deeply felt. Olav will be greatly missed.

The news of Olav’s accident was shocking and hearing of his passing was heartbreaking. I am really thankful that I was able to know Olav. From singing karaoke on the Upper East Side where it was all fun and games to times where business could be melting down and I’d get a calm, cool, collected “Hi John” in his Norwegian accent. It would make me laugh. It would make our office laugh. It was a pleasure and I greatly enjoyed the good times we were able to spend with each other. My condolences to his family and friends. Olav will be missed dearly.
