I met Joe and Jocelyn Charles in 1991 at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. In those days, medical school was in East Lansing, Michigan. Joe and I, and many other minority med students, had the honor of participating in Dr. Wanda Lipscomb's Advanced Baccalaureate Learning Experience (ABLE) program. We shared the status of being first-generation medical students, and our success in ABLE prepared us for being Year 1 medical students. Joe Charles was a Minority Medical Student Association member and an enthusiastic participant of the Families in Medicine support group. Dr. Joe Charles had integrity and compassion; he withstood the rigorous demands of his profession and, despite adversity, never lost sight of his goal of becoming a physician. Dr. Joe's upbeat spirit and exuberance were as contagious as his laughter. He was an eager support person for First-year Med students of color. Dr. Joe was accepted into the OBGYN Residency program at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan and our lives overlapped again. We survived and suffered through the process, always focusing on the dream. No matter what. Joe and Jocelyn began their family during Joe's residency years. Our paths diverged, only to re-connect in New Mexico almost twenty years later. Although we worked for different companies as Locum Tenens physicians, we shared call coverage at Los Alamos Medical Center, Los Alamos, New Mexico. This month, Dr. Charles and I were scheduled to cover the ObGyn call in Los Alamos. True to the mission of MSU College of Human Medicine, Dr. Charles provided care for the underserved in rural New Mexico. The communities of Las Vegas, New Mexico and Los Alamos, New Mexico will remember him as a compassionate, gentle, energetic, and kind physician.

I met Joe in 1988 when I returned from serving time in Germany. He was dating my sister (his wife). It was as if I'd known him for years. He was so funny.  We often shared jokes - just a fun person to be around. He was always reaching out to help others. Joe was my brother and I will miss him dearly. I pray for strength and peace  for the rest of the family during this difficult loss. I also look forward to seeing him again when our Jesus returns!   Love, Sister-in-law (Ms. Eric)

Heartfelt condolences to the Charles’ Family and all of Joseph’s relatives and friends. Joseph and I were childhood friends and classmates . He was always full of energy and had an insatiable desire to learn. He grew up to be a remarkable,  distinguished gentleman with an excellent spirit.  Yet, he was quite humble.  Joe will be greatly missed.

May the comfort of the Holy Spirit and the strength of God, keep and preserve the entire family in this extremely difficult time of grief.

Love you all

I remember our last conversation. We laughed so hard😂😂You talked about the old Christian Fellowship church and how you longed for those times. “That was church!” you said  and we all agreed😂Well no more longing! You are now in the presence of our Glorious King!!  We jealous😛 We sang bind us together Lord with cords that cannot be broken and indeed we have been bound thru Jehovah’s love for us.  Thanks for sharing your life with us because no matter how long or short the time, each of us are blessed and better to have known you. Continued Prayers for the entire family 🙏🏽We love yous❤️

This is a shock to me. I remember the day my daughter was born it was because he delivered her. He was a good doctor and he also removed my nexplanon. He told me how much he loved delivering babies and didn’t like to be in the other place removing nexplanons and stuff like that lol. If it’s one good memory it’s the fact that he loved his job so much. He cared for people and their families. Thank you Dr. Charles for your work and for caring for my daughter and I like you did. It was wonderful to ever have known you. My condolences to the family. I’m so sorry for your losses. May he R.I.P
