John and Mary Ellen Friends were some of our earliest friends from our Deerfield Academy years, and part of our community for over 30 years. It was always a pleasure to spend time with them.
John led the Full Circle School in Bernardston, where our son Avery attended sixth grade and had an absolutely wonderful experience at a pivotal time in his life.
We are deeply grateful to John for creating such a thoughtful, nurturing place for kids to learn and grow.
John always had a smile on his face, and he was always up to something. He will be missed and he will be remembered!
Then there was the time he tried to help me water ski for the first time. I didn’t actually make it up, but it was quite the memorable experience and he was very patient!
Holding Mary Ellen, Caleb, Ellie, their family and friends, and the Full Circle and Deerfield Academy communities in our hearts.

John and I were kindred spirits in our love of water (and growing up on skateboards), but his legendary skills on all types of boards - on land, sea or snow - defied the laws of physics. John was in a league of his own! His love and enthusiasm for fun, friends and family remain an inspiration for all. We send love and prayers for Mary Ellen and family. John brought me into his life with his love for bikes and every kind of outdoor adventure. His love and support were monumental when my life fell apart in 2020, and he helped me rebuild my life after that. It's impossible to list all the ways that I am a better man because of him and impossible to express all the many ways I will miss him. With love to Mary Ellen, Caleb and Elie.

It seems like every scenario John touched became sweeter, wiser, gentler, and / or funnier. What an unrepeatable combination of love, athleticism, compassion, and intellect! What a blessing he has been in my life as Full Circle's music teacher. He started out as one of my "bosses" and became a true friend. Like everyone else who knew him, I send boatloads of love to Mary Ellen, Caleb, Ellie, and all of John's loved ones.
