Auntie Irene was such a lovely person. I am very sad that she is gone. She was always so easy-going, friendly to me, and close to my mom. I'm pretty sure I was the flower girl at their wedding when I was very small and will post a picture of that. I remember many fun family visits at 789 West End Ave in NYC with my little cousins when I was a child and the year I lived with my grandparents while I was in college. When Uncle Jay and Aunt Irene made their trek to California they made a stop in Denver and stayed in our Airbnb. The night they stayed with us turned out to be Uncle Jay's birthday and I believe it was also their wedding anniversary! Chris and I were struck by the loving relationship they have. It is a rare thing and we were very moved. We all went to dinner and Chris and I brought them a cake to celebrate. Most recently, I stopped by their old apartment to say hello as I was traveling through the Bay area a few years ago — shortly after the whole COVID fiasco started to slow down. Before I got there Auntie Irene went to a dim sum restaurant and brought home an amazing meal... so much delicious food! We had a great chat. It was the last time I saw her. I am so glad I went to see them both. She was the epitome of graceful and I will miss her very much.
Irene was my piano teacher for many years. She had prepared me for my college entrance auditions as well as made me a beautiful life long pianist. She was always so patient and kind. I will always be grateful to Irene for all that she has taught me. After my years as her student we stayed in touch and became life long friends. She will be missed greatly.
I was blessed to be Irene’s neighbor for 10 years. She took me under her wings and became my Big Sister naturally. She was protective of me. So, soon after she & Jay decided to move [closer to Eugene], she urged me and helped me to find a good senior-living facility to resettle, because she would not be around anymore… She was more than a friend, she was my Guardian Angel.
Dear Jay, My deepest sympathy about your loss. My mom, Pui Chiang aka Helen, always spoke very fond of Teacher Irene. My mom passed away early this year, but she always spoke very highly of Teacher Irene. She really loved the English class, and was always very impressed by the dedication and thought Teacher Irene always put into the class to help everyone. Words are not enough to express our sorrow. Sadly it is a loss that we all have to endure. May her rest in peace.
