Chen Juo's obituary

Chen Juo “Gary” Cheng, 81, passed away on October 17, 2021 peacefully in his sleep. Chen Juo was born in 1940 to Jeh Ming Cheng and Chon Chow Liu in Fuzhou, China. Jeh Ming and Chon Chow had four children: Janet, Chen Juo, Margaret and Anthony. The family moved to Taiwan in 1949 with the Kuomingtang government.

After graduating from High School of National Taiwan Normal University in 1958, Chen Juo went on to study math at National Cheng Kung University. He received his B.S. in 1962 and then completed required military service before moving to the U.S. to pursue graduate studies at the University of California, Davis.

While at UC Davis, he met Margaret and they started dating. They were both part of a tight-knit community of Chinese students, who remain close to this day. Chen Juo received his M.S. in Math from UC Davis in 1966.

Chen Juo and Margaret got engaged in 1967 and married in 1969. They moved to Monterey Park in 1971 and went on to have three children: Jennifer, Allen and Kevin. Chen Juo and Margaret lived in the same house (through several remodels) for the past 50 years. They have countless wonderful memories in their home, where they hosted many, many gatherings of family and friends (high school E5 classmates, “Old Horse” basketball teammates, college friends, and new friends who also immigrated from Taiwan).

In 1969, Chen Juo kicked off his 25-year career as a financial analyst with United California Bank (which eventually became First Interstate Bank, and finally Wells Fargo). Within his first few years, he proposed that the bank change from compounding interest by month to daily, which garnered new customers for the bank and soon became the industry norm.

After retiring in 1994, Chen Juo spent his time golfing and traveling, in between chauffeuring his two sons (before they learned to drive) and the occasional mahjong game. Chen Juo was predeceased by his father and mother. He is survived by his wife Margaret, his daughter Jennifer, his son Allen, Allen’s wife Han, their children, Hayden and Ellie, his son Kevin, Kevin’s wife Julie, and their children, Jones and Reggie.
