Wilmot's obituary

Wilmot Franklin O'Loughlin, 92, passed away on October 6th, 2023 in Alexandria, VA. He leaves behind a tapestry of experiences that will be cherished by those who knew him.

Wilmot Franklin O'Loughlin was born on August 19, 1931, in Basseterre, St. Kitts, to Harold O’Loughlin and Doris Guyshard. In his early years, he formed a lifelong friendship with Dr. Emile Webster while in kindergarten, a bond that endured until Dr. Webster's passing in 2019. He had a close relationship with his older brothers, Stanley Laws and Sydney Buchanon, as they did everything together when they were in St. Kitts.

From a young age, he displayed a keen interest in photography, capturing countless cherished memories for families in his studio. He also served as an official government photographer, providing passport photos. His artistic talents and dedication to his craft were evident in every image he captured.

In 1956, Wilmot Franklin O'Loughlin embarked on a new chapter of his life, immigrating to the United States and diving into the field of electronic technology through correspondence and in-person trade schools. His dedication culminated in earning an FTC radio license, which allowed him to receive passive income as radio stations paid licensing fees to operate. He initially joined the Air Force as a photographer but after testing and training became a signaling technician, furthering his expertise in electronics.

After leaving the Air Force in 1964 and obtaining US citizenship, he pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering Technology through the GI Bill. This education paved the way for a successful career as a US defense contractor, where he installed and managed military electrical and signaling systems across the Far East, including Hawaii.

By 1972, Wilmot Franklin O'Loughlin had relocated to New York City and later settled in Northern Virginia, where he was involved in the startup of satellite TV stations. His journey took various turns, including a stint with the Social Security Administration in Brooklyn and a later transfer to the Woodburn, MD office, where he worked until his retirement in the late 2000s.

After the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis got its independence in 1983, he played a role in the founding of the St. Kitts and Nevis Nationals Association (SKNNA) along with Dr. Emile Webster and other Federation nationals located in the DC Metro area.  SKNNA fostered unity among the local Federation nationals as well as established a communication pathway for all of the Federation Nationals located within North America. The newly established Embassy of St. Kitts and Nevis located in Washington, DC, used SKNNA to solidify its presence for nationals located across the US and Canada. His dedication to the community was recognized by then-Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglass in the late 1990’s.

On January 19, 1974, Wilmot Franklin O'Loughlin married Elayne Evadney Lowe at Riverside Church in Manhattan, NY. They had one daughter and were together for 20 years.   He spent over 30 years with his longtime partner, Carmen Aguilera, until her untimely death in 2021.

Wilmot Franklin O'Loughlin is survived by cherished memories and the love of many. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.  He is survived by his ex-wife, three children, four grandchildren, the descendants of Stanley Laws, the descendants of Sydney Buchanon, and the descendants of Harold O’Loughlin.

The interment of his ashes at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church Memorial Grove will happen at a later date.
