Sam's obituary
Sam passed away suddenly on February 8th, just a few days after his 31st birthday. His family has been devastated by this terrible loss. He was born and raised in Northern Virginia and attended school in Ashburn. He excelled at soccer, hockey, and boxing but will always be remembered for his warm smile and kind heart. After graduating from West Virginia University with a degree in Forestry, he worked for several local companies as a licensed arborist and, most recently, as a sales representative for Davey Trees.
Although Sam struggled with depression and periods of deep despair, he found joy through his many hobbies and pursuits. He loved being outdoors and was an avid hiker and biker. Sam was actively studying Muay Thai (kickboxing) and trained at Little Giant Gym in Falls Church. Sam had a huge impact on the people he met throughout his abbreviated life. Over 140 friends, family, and co-workers, some traveling from overseas, attended his Memorial Service to pay their respects and say "goodbye" to a truly outstanding young man. He will be greatly missed.
Sam is survived by his parents Caroline and Dan Smith, his brothers Matthew and Jason, Jason's wife Meredith as well as his cousins Allyssa and Andrew who moved into the family home 10 years ago following the death of their parents. Sam was very fortunate to share his life with his loving girlfriend, Danika. Their many adventures were the highlight of his last few years.
