On behalf of the Science History Institute, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr William J. Rutter.
Dr Rutter, a pioneering biochemist and biotechnology visionary, transformed biomedical science through his leadership in academia and industry. As co-founder of Chiron Corporation and former chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at University of California San Francisco (UCSF), he was instrumental in shaping the modern biotechnology era. His work not only deepened scientific understanding but also paved the way for life-changing therapies—including treatments for multiple sclerosis—that have benefited millions.
A recipient of the Biotechnology Heritage Award in 2003*, Dr Rutter was recognized by the Science History Institute and the Biotechnology Innovation Organization for his lasting contributions to the field and his entrepreneurial foresight. His legacy embodies the very spirit of innovation, collaboration, and translational science that the award celebrates.
Dr Rutter was also a generous supporter of the Science History Institute, helping to preserve and share the intertwined stories of science, industry, and humanity.
As a postdoctoral scholar at UCSF, I fondly remember the immensely fulfilling times I spent at the William J. Rutter Center at UCSF’s Mission Bay campus—attending lectures and symposia, including the Tobacco
Center’s annual global symposium at Robertson Auditorium or a remarkable panel with four FDA commissioners on regulatory science; studying in its cozy library; swimming atop the building; or biking along its northern bank toward the San Francisco Bay.
His legacy as a scientist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist has left an indelible mark on science and society alike globally. We remain deeply grateful for his enduring example and generosity.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.
With respect and sympathy,
Dr Merdad Momadi
