On behalf of the Science History Institute, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr William J. Rutter.

Dr Rutter, a pioneering biochemist and biotechnology visionary, transformed biomedical science through his leadership in academia and industry. As co-founder of Chiron Corporation and former chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at University of California San Francisco (UCSF), he was instrumental in shaping the modern biotechnology era. His work not only deepened scientific understanding but also paved the way for life-changing therapies—including treatments for multiple sclerosis—that have benefited millions.

A recipient of the Biotechnology Heritage Award in 2003*, Dr Rutter was recognized by the Science History Institute and the Biotechnology Innovation Organization for his lasting contributions to the field and his entrepreneurial foresight. His legacy embodies the very spirit of innovation, collaboration, and translational science that the award celebrates.

Dr Rutter was also a generous supporter of the Science History Institute, helping to preserve and share the intertwined stories of science, industry, and humanity.

As a postdoctoral scholar at UCSF, I fondly remember the immensely fulfilling times I spent at the William J. Rutter Center at UCSF’s Mission Bay campus—attending lectures and symposia, including the Tobacco

Center’s annual global symposium at Robertson Auditorium or a remarkable panel with four FDA commissioners on regulatory science; studying in its cozy library; swimming atop the building; or biking along its northern bank toward the San Francisco Bay.

His legacy as a scientist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist has left an indelible mark on science and society alike globally. We remain deeply grateful for his enduring example and generosity.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.

With respect and sympathy,

Dr Merdad Momadi

Tribute to Dr. William J. Rutter

By a former student of UCSF’s Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

In my many years working to improve healthcare and biomedical science in Vietnam, few scientific achievements have stood out as powerfully as the development of the recombinant hepatitis B vaccine. This breakthrough — led by Dr. William J. Rutter and his colleagues — has saved millions of lives worldwide. In Vietnam, where hepatitis B remains a serious public health threat, it has helped transform the health outlook of an entire generation. His work brought hope to my people long before many of us fully understood the science behind it.

With deep sorrow and enduring gratitude, I join the UCSF family in mourning the passing of Dr. William J. Rutter — a visionary leader whose legacy helped shape the future of global public health and inspired generations of scientists. I was a student at UCSF when Dr. Rutter chaired the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. Though I was not directly mentored by him, many of his students — including Dr. Pablo Valenzuela and Dr. Charles Craik — became my teachers and advisors. His influence was deeply felt in the culture of our training: we were taught to act with selfless purpose, to think broadly, and to believe in science as a force to protect and uplift all peoples of the world.

For me personally, Dr. Rutter has always been a profound source of pride. Whenever I was asked — in Vietnam or abroad — what made UCSF exceptional, his name would naturally rise to the top, alongside my own mentors, Profs. Manfred E. Wolff,  John D. Baxter and Peter E. Kollman. He embodied all that we admired: vision, innovation, service to humanity, and humility in the face of greatness.

His passing is a tremendous loss to the world. But his legacy lives on — in every scientist he helped inspire, every student who walked through the doors he opened, and every life saved by the science he so courageously advanced.

With profound respect and remembrance,

Thai D. Nguyen, PhD

Other than an occasional “hello” in hallways, I did not know Bill until at one of the Chiron Reunions, we were sitting at the same table. During our conversation, I was struck by his enthusiasm and openness in sharing his recent involvement in China’s Diagnostic business, and programs he instituted in India and parts of Africa as we connected over a mutual interest for volunteering services. Bill’s attitude toward philanthropy was no surprise. His leadership in instituting Chiron’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan where “ALL” Chiron employees are eligible to contribute 15% salary to this program demonstrates his commitment to social equality.

My “gainful employment” at Chiron was more than a paycheck. It gave me the opportunity to pursue scientific discovery and innovation in Mike Houghton’s group and make lifelong friends as part of the “HCV” family. I will always cherish my memories at “CHIRON.” Thank you, Bill, for your part in making it happen.

Happy Birthday, Bill!

Bill didn't celebrate his birthday often, so we don't even have pictures of the birthday boy. In the early days of Synergenics, our office chipped in to buy Bill a birthday gift. But Bill said it wasn't Rutter family tradition to observe birthdays. We had to return the gift.

As Hank Rutter’s wife, it has been my honor to be Bill Rutter’s daughter-in-law for 47 years. Bill warmly welcomed me into the family with kindness and generosity. Family was very important to him. He was interested and encouraging for our careers and endeavors. He kept in touch with his brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews, expressing interest in their endeavors. Thanks to Bill and his distinguished career, Hank and I enjoyed dining at great restaurants, attending the symphony and the opera and traveling to lovely places. The trip to Washington, D.C. when he received the Heinz Award and the trip to Philadelphia where he received the Franklin Award were just two of the stand-out memories. It was an adventure to accompany Bill to one of his conferences. At a one in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, I skipped attending his talk since I couldn’t pronounce, let alone, understand the topic, but the skiing was great. Before meeting Hank and, thus, Bill, I never imagined the places we would go and the vast and varied experiences I would have. My life is enriched beyond measure through Bill and the privilege I have had of being a part of his family.

I feel so incredibly lucky to have known and worked for Bill. I remember feeling full of jitters when he asked me onto the dance floor at Chiron's epic first Christmas party at the Academy of Sciences. I had been asked to put together "a party to remember" (after being hired by CK Chang as a facilities coordinator) for the quickly growing company so we could show off a bit to our neighbors at Cetus. I do believe it was a success! After a bit of traveling, I worked as an administrative assistant in his Hormone Research Institute lab at UCSF with Reg Kelly, even though Bill spent most of his time by then at Chiron. Bill asked me to come work for him as his executive assistant at Chiron, and that's when I really got to know what an extraordinary human he was. Working with Bill, Ed, Pablo and the incredible group of dedicated scientists was something to behold -- I saw firsthand his skill in fostering and nurturing talent, negotiating complex deals with pharma giants and travel the world seemingly without jetlag! Sometimes it felt like the only time he slowed down was when he was actually on an international flight -- that is, until they put phones on the airplanes...  We kept in touch throughout the years, and he was always so supportive, encouraging me to keep learning. What a remarkable man.

Cindy, Hank and Susan -- may your memory of your father be a blessing. He inspired so many of us in so many ways. Just thinking of those sparkling blue eyes brings a smile to my face.

I'm so sorry for the loss of William. We will always remember him.
we had a small  lunch group, The Pink Friday group who came from all over the company and share our comradery as LGBTQ.  We decided to ask the bosses if we could get domestic partnership .  Bill, was surprised he hadn't thought of that and he immediately agreed.  The next townhall meeting we had, Bill announced it to the company.   The following Gay Pride parade, he lent us a banner to walk in the parade with.  Such a caring person he was... to all of us.
Forever I will be grateful for the gift of Bill Rutter - he made the world a better place — and he was a wonderful friend! So many wonderful stories that we all hold in our hearts! Wishing peace and comfort to Bill’s family and a life long sense of gratitude for us all for the gift of Bill! 🙏🏻❤️

We were deeply honored to know Bill not only as a towering figure in science and biotechnology, but as a warm, generous, and genuinely curious friend whose brilliance was matched only by his humility. In our many social gatherings over the last handful of years, we came to cherish his spirited conversations, his readiness to celebrate others’ achievements, and the kindness with which he engaged our lives. He was an amazing fountain of focused energy, and it’s hard to believe that someone like that could ever die. Though we are deeply saddened by his passing, we carry forward his warmth, generosity, and profound belief in the power of science.

So many lives have been touched by Bill both from his pioneering scientific leadership in biotechnology and also from his personal friendships.  But above all, I wish to share my condolences with Alice Corning who has been Bill’s loving companion in his later years; his family, especially Cindy and Hank; close personal friends such as Reg Kelly, Bruce and Betty Alberts, Jim and Anna Spudich and the many, many others who have both admired and loved him.
