I was a seminarian teaching at Judge Memorial in Salt Lake from 1969 to 1972 when Ivan was Vice Principal. We became good friends and even played hockey as members of the Sheriffs team in the amateur league that played games in the Salt Palace. We were both from Western New York and both graduated from Bishop Duffy High in Niagara Falls 10 years apart. I left the seminary in 1972 and Ivan left the priesthood about the same time as well. After spending a few years back east, I returned to Salt Lake in 1974 and roomed with him in his house on the hill until I moved on in 1975. Though I never saw himagain, I can't say enough good things about Ivan...he was a wonderful, honorable person and a true friend.

Dear Jan, Nick, Alex and the many friends and colleagues who Ivan touched and changed. I, too am one of those fortunate ones. I can add another story which reflects those here, and the many others which reside in so many people’s hearts.
I just learned of Ivan’s passing on this October day. I was attempting a bit of drawing today of the eclipse. My skill is quite primitive, and rather than self criticism at my effort, this memory of Ivan arose, “Perfection awaits us in Heaven.” This from a day working in his backyard with a neighbor, and myself on abig backyard project of his. This memory led me to this book and my brief story.
My your kind, compassionate heart with your deep intelligence and education continue to wind it’s way through all those you touched in new and meaningful ways.
Thanks, Ivan.
With love,
Stephen (Steve) Nicholas

What a beautiful tribute to your sweet dad today. It was just lovely. He certainly raised remarkable young men! Again, he was truly the best of all of us.

When I was an Oblate seminarian, I taught at Judge Memorial from 1970 - 1972. Ivan was my principal. I remember Ivan as an intelligent, kind, and engaging man. I feel very fortunate to have known him and been under him. Though I will not be at his funeral, I have arranged that a memorial Mass be offered for Ivan on March 17 '23 at my parish in Waterford, Ontario. I will prayerfully remember Ivan and his family. God bless and keep you, Ivan. We shall certainly meet again in God's loving warmth. Greg Bassett

Mr. Cendese was the Vice-Principal my Junior year at Judge and Principal my Senior year. He was always Father Cendese and that is how I remember him. I was one of the many that believed the golden gloves story. I remember him as a fair man, unbiased and just. To his family my deepest condolences. Remember the happy times.

Seeing Ivan in his robes advising Alex on his wedding day is a compelling memory for me. He was a spiritual and charismatic person, who paid attention. Also that smile! Requiescat in pace.

Until we moved in next door in 1982, I had never met anyone like Ivan. Though he could sometimes appear to have his head in the clouds, he would often come out with a whip-smart observation or perspective no one else had seen. He was always his genuine self without a trace of self-consciousness. He could make an occasion out of anything, including but not limited to an improvised funeral for a pet rabbit that left us all in tears from trying not to laugh. I don't think I ever saw him without a smile on his face, and the memory of him puts a smile on mine. I'm grateful to have been the recipient of his love and friendship, and that of his beautiful family.

Thank you for the wonderful obituary of Ivan's life. I too was a graduate of Bishop Duffy, and as a seminarian myself, I taught under him at Judge Memorial from 1969 to 1971. After leaving the seminary I was able to rent a room and live with him in SLC from 1973 to 1974. He was always a wonderful friend. My life has been enriched because of knowing him. May your spirit travel well, Ivan. Love & peace.

I remember Ivan from Father Judge HS in the fifties where he taught and coached football. I believed the broken nose story. I also shared time with him at the Oblate seminary in Washington. I agree with the obituary, which is truly well-written. A good guy in my memory, full of energy and talent. It's nice to know he had such a full ministry and a wonderful family. RIP. Jim Murphy
