Verner is the town of Tom's ancestors that we passed through on our way to Killarney, Ontario where we'd go on our annual Georgian Bay kayak trip.

If there was a favorite place on the Ottawa River for Tom, it had to be Rideau Falls throughout all four seasons. This majestic and powerfull falls in the spring would often lessen to that of a curtain of water in the late summer, when we could push the bows of our kayaks under the cascading water and touch the rockface. Spectators above would watch and take photos, as we played in the spray of this wonderful natural feature of Ottawa. [photo by John Savage]

During COVID, Tom and I took advantage of our love of outdoors to entertain ourselves on the river in the evenings as well. Rideau Falls at night is like a dream, when paddling up to it illuminated, it's a mysterious force or foreboding in its darkened monster state. [photo by John Savage]

Tom found the falls exhilerating to play below in, the roar of the water crashing down, waves churned up, and spray soaking through out clothes that was welcome on the hot days of summer. [photo by John Savage]

Tom and I used to enjoy ice floe riding, as a rite of Spring. As the ice first broke up, below the Rideau Falls, we would jump in my canoe to paddle to the falls, jump aboard an ice floe and set up for our ride down the river past the Prime Minister's house and my neighbours downriver. This would include a celebratory beer, some football or frisbee, photos and other hijinx. One time while jumping around, I fell through the ice and we took pictures of that too. He was always up for an urban adventure like this. My neighbours who grew up on the river said they never seen people do this before. I wonder what the PM Steven Harper thought too, as he may have caught a glimpse of us.

Resting between sets of rapids. Tom and I first met whitewater canoeing. Although we were both trained librarians, it was navigating the fast moving rivers of the Ottawa Valley that brought us together. Later, we took up all kinds of activities together, kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, cycling, nightclubbing, and attending music festivals and art shows. We were wingmen for one another whenever there was some opportunity for adventure or a social gathering. I will miss him forever now whenever such opportunities arise.
