I was very excited to meet Ti…
1994, Sunnyvale, CA, USA

I was very excited to meet Tim for the first time at the 1994 ICQC congress in Prague when I was a second-year graduate student.  I'd been learning a lot from his many papers on analytic gradient methods, coupled-cluster, Renner-Teller theory, and more, and I'd been looking forward to asking him lots and lots of questions.  Tim was very generous with his patience and time in that first meeting, and I had the good fortune to visit him at NASA Ames a few months later.

During that first visit – one of many, I'm happy to say – Tim and Julia were very kind to invite me to their house for dinner, where I met their (very small!) sons, Sebastian and Marcus (Trevor arrived later).  At one point that evening, Tim was getting the boys ready for bed, starting with a bath, which Tim intentionally pronounced with his best effort at the British "bahth".  He claimed that he wanted to see if the boys would grow up saying that specific word like their mother does, in spite of their American environment.  I've always meant to ask them if his experiment was a success.

Since my first interactions with Tim and Julia, I have been honored to count them among my friends and mentors.  I will miss Tim both personally and professionally.

I've uploaded a few photos from my library to the Google photos site, but here's one from our first meeting in Prague back in 1994.  I'm not in the photo, because I didn't think I should appear in a pic with a group of such distinguished scientists!

I am so sorry about Tim’s passing.  He was always kind, thoughtful, and inclusive to me and others.  He encouraged me and offered me advice.  I will miss him.
I'm so very sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of providing administrative support to Tim when his was Chief in the Space Science and Astrobiology Division.  I appreciated his leadership and always could talk to him with ease.   I will cherish those memories.
