Steve's obituary

With a love of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and surrounded by his wonderful family and friends, Steve passed peacefully from this earth in the Lord’s hands on September 10, 2023. He was born in Huntington Park, California on March 10, 1938 to James J. Fryer of Doland, South Dakota and Marjorie Stearns Fryer of Santa Rosa, New Mexico. After a number of years moving around during WWII while his dad served in the Army Air Corps, the family settled down in San Gabriel, California. Steve attended Alhambra High School where he was a four-sport letterman, served in student government, participated at Boy’s State and was lead trumpeter in the concert orchestra. He went on to attend the University of Southern California by way of a L.A. Times full scholarship he earned delivering papers. Steve majored in Mechanical Engineering. While there he played on the football team, was Consul of and active in Sigma Chi Fraternity, as well as the interfraternity council, Engineering Council and Songfest Committee.

After graduating in 1960, he joined The General Electric Company on their Technical Marketing Program and travelled across the country to the various GE facilities. Eventually, he landed in Phoenix, Arizona with the Process Computer division where he was involved in the programming of and the automation of Southern California Edison’s power plants (the first in the nation). After GE, Steve returned to California and wore many hats from working with various computer companies to founding a new company, ACRO, involved in the manufacturing and international distribution of computer terminals. Ultimately in 2001, Steve formed SC Capital Partners, an investment banking firm located in Orange County, from which he retired in early 2023.

Steve married Janet in 1979, a second marriage for them both. Steve had three sons, Janet, a daughter and together, another daughter. Family was incredibly important to Steve and he loved all of his children equally … his, hers and theirs. Steve was a long-time member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach. He served as an Elder, was active in Men’s Ministries and Men’s Fellowship and hosted numerous mission trips to Arizona working amongst the Presbyterian Churches on the Indian reservations. He was also very active with Royal Family Kids. Steve was an Eagle Scout and worked as a Cub Scout leader with his sons and his grandson. One of Steve’s greatest joys was travelling. A family favorite was vacationing on the island of Maui almost every summer. He and Janet also enjoyed travelling around Europe with Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland and Denmark among their favorite countries to visit. Anyone who knew him, knew Steve was a faithful Christian, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, as well as a compassionate giver to those in need.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother Marjorie, his father James and his brother Roger. He leaves behind his wife Janet of 44 years, his three sons George, Brad (wife Sandi) and Jeff, as well as his two daughters Michelle and Stephanie (husband Niels). He also leaves behind seven loving grandchildren Megan, Zachary (wife Jaidi), Dylan, Sophia, Lars, Christian and Lilia. Our memories will keep him in our hearts … always missed, always and forever loved.
