Steve and I before a great game. Steve was invited by the University President, Carol Folt, to sit in her new suite at the Coliseum.

What made Steve different from most people you know? He had a magnetic force that made us want to be around him. One of his many strengths was being an attentive listener. Steve didn’t interrupt you, he allowed you to tell him your thoughts and made you feel valued by giving you his attention. He provided encouragement and positivity when responding with his advice. 

I met Steve several times while visiting the St. Andrew’s Men’s Fellowship and a Bible study he and my dad attended together. He was so likable and friendly. He always remembered some detail of my life and took an interest in me. The last time I saw him was at my dad’s Celebration of Life at St. Andrew’s in March. Although his body was failing, he was the same man I had known for years. I will miss him. I pray for the family’s loss and grief, but I also rejoice in the certainty of a reunion in heaven! 

Though I didn't meet Steve personally, his fingerprints remain on the organization I serve, Royal Family KIDS/For The Children. As a past member of our board and passionate advocate for children, Steve will be remembered by all of our staff for his kindness and leadership. 

On behalf of our staff and board, we send our deepest condolences to Janet, their children, and grandchildren. We are also deeply thankful for your generosity in designating gifts to Royal Family KIDS/For The Children in Steve's memory, a legacy that will live on through the children we serve together. 

May you receive God's comfort and abundant blessing as you remember and celebrate Steve's life.

My condolences to Steve's family. Steve and I were friends as Sigma Chi brothers beginning in 1958, and later as members of the Trojan Football Alumni Club. We always met at the last USC home game every year on the coliseum field to welcome the senior players to the Club. If possible, every year beginning in the 1970's Steve and some of the Fryer family boys would join my family, the Peters, for fishing and poker. We always took time, on those fishing trips, to get in our boat and troll for rainbow trout for a few hours while talking about our families and friends and world events. After 65 years of friendship, I miss Steve. 

The first time I met Steve Fryer was when I walked into his office having started a new job as a stockbroker with an Orange County firm; the first things I saw were photographs of the NCAA basketball game I attended in 1990 in Long Beach. That game was legend for my family as I witnessed a game that I subsequently shared with my boys as soon as they understood how sports worked and the miracles that could ensue. When I asked why he had those photos hanging in his office he said he was Jeff Fryer's father...I was astounded, and thus began a years' long miraculous relationship. We were the most unlikely pairing of partners imaginable. Me, a "self-educated" former rock singer from the bowels of Detroit and he, a graduate of USC's school of engineering. An unlikely combination if there ever was one. Me, almost "far left" Detroit Democrat and he, an Orange County Republican from Huron, South Dakota (which I had the pleasure of visiting while on a cross-country trip!). What I learned from Steve - and the lesson stayed in my heart until this day, is that kindness, understanding and character are the only things that matter. We were partners for years and he had the most profound influence on me of anyone I've ever had the pleasure to know. His influence helped me stabilize my life and the lives of my two sons (Max and Nick) through his volunteer work at the Indian Reservation in Arizona. They accompanied him on a reconstruction project and the work they did on that trip prepared them for the careers they have today. He changed the lives of my entire family, and the gratitude I have for his influence will be felt every day I remain on this planet.  He walked like he talked and occupies a place in our hearts that will never be replaced or forgotten.

Steve served on my cooking team at the men's Wednesday breakfast and bible study for years and was the chief  cutter and server of my wife's caserole every every 5 weeks.  He was also loved at the Friday am bible study with his bible incites and   partisipation. Such a friendly spirit and laugh. The Lord will welcome Steve with open arms. Blessing to his family and friends who have lost a beautiful Christian.

My first cousin Steve and brother Roger were my best friends when I came from Hawaii to Los Angeles. I was on my own in a very strange place with a lot of unknown people. Steve included me in his activities with USC and first wife/girlfriend Nanette. His friends were mine - and San Gabriel was a home away from home with Uncle Jim and Aunt Marge. My first wedding was in their backyard, officiated by their San Gabriel minister, Rev. Ron Molrine. My parents came from Hawaii and my University classmates were best lady and man. Jim and Marge, as well as Steve and Roger, were ultimate USC fans, particularly when in the Rose Bowl. I remember being pregnant with my daughter, and Uncle Jim smoking his cigar as we walked up to the Rose Parade after parking in Bowl parking lot. They were so organized with food and drink. Both of them passed much too early. Roger and Mary, and Steve and Janet were always stops in my visits to California. I was probably closer to them as the rest of the family is spread out all over the U.S. I will miss my buddies Steve and Roger as long as I live. Amen to the both of them as the very good individuals they were and they are now receiving God's blessings.

Steve Fryer, that’s what he always said when he answered the phone. It seemed so formal, but when you saw him in person, he was so warm and welcoming. Uncle Steve would be in shorts, a Hawaiian shirt and a beaming smile. It never failed, he would genuinely ask how you were doing and really listened when you responded. That’s how I choose to remember him every day.
