Sina's obituary
Honoring the Life of Sina Sinbari
(June 4, 2001 – April 20, 2026)
It is with profound sadness, yet immense pride in the life he lived, that the Sinbari family announces the passing of Sina Sinbari on April 20, 2026, at the age of 24. A beloved son, brother, friend, and collegiate athlete, Sina lost his courageous four-year battle with desmoplastic small round cell tumors, an exceptionally rare and aggressive cancer. But to say Sina "lost" a battle would be to misunderstand the way he lived. Over the last four years, Sina taught everyone around him what it means to be truly unbreakable.
Born and raised in Southern California, Sina’s lifelong passion was volleyball. By the summer of 2022, the 21-year-old standout outside hitter was preparing to report to Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in New Jersey to play Division I volleyball. Just two weeks before he was set to arrive on campus, severe back pain led to a devastating diagnosis.
Instead of stepping onto the court for his inaugural season, Sina began an unimaginably grueling regimen of treatments at UCLA Health. Over the next four years, he endured more than 30 rounds of chemotherapy, daily radiation, major surgeries, and weeks of hospitalization. Yet, the cancer could never break his spirit. He possessed an extreme mentality, drawing inspiration from his athletic heroes and translating it into a relentless fight for his life.
Sina refused to let his diagnosis steal his dreams. While undergoing intense treatments, he would fly cross-country on red-eye flights—straight from chemotherapy at UCLA to 7:00 a.m. volleyball practices in New Jersey—just to be with his team. Even when his body was broken, his voice was the loudest in the gym. His astonishing resilience culminated in a triumphant return to the court on January 15, 2025, where he delivered a kill on the very first point he played.
His journey earned him national recognition, including the Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award and FDU’s Comeback Player of the Year. In May 2025, he proudly graduated with a bachelor's degree in business and promptly enrolled at UCLA to pursue a master's degree in Business Law. Driven by an unrelenting work ethic, Sina took on extra academic units to complete his master's program in just one year. He was proudly scheduled to walk and receive his degree this May of 2026. His unwavering dedication was so profound that even from his hospital bed on Sunday evening, the night before he passed away, he was still talking about and concerned with the final school projects he needed to turn in.
Beyond his athletic and academic achievements, Sina’s true legacy lies in his profound empathy. During his longest, darkest hospital stays, stripped of his strength, he found a new purpose in lifting up others. He befriended a 9-year-old pediatric cancer patient named "Z," creating pump-up playlists and reaching out to his athlete network to make personalized videos to encourage the young boy to keep fighting. As Sina regained his strength, he dedicated himself to an internship with Make-A-Wish, striving to be a light for children facing critical illnesses.
Sina was a force of nature. He had an infectious smile, a charismatic personality that turned strangers into immediate friends, and an intense fire for life. He showed us that no matter the obstacles, the human spirit can endure.
The Sinbari family invites all who knew and loved him—and all who were inspired by his incredible story—to join them in a Celebration of Life. Sina would not want us to mourn in silence; he would want us to celebrate the beautiful, hard-fought, and deeply impactful life he lived.
