From former neighbors and friends Chris Holmes and Patrick Eldrdge:
We miss our dear friend and former neighbor.
John Lennon said, “Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears.”
From the moment we met our neighbors, Sid and Nancy, we connected in a way as only old friends would. Never had a feeling that we needed to get to know each other, Sid warmed our hearts as if we had known each other forever.
We have always felt that humor was the glue that binds any relationship and Sid’s sense of it was artful. Ever friendly, but sharp; informed but lighthearted; pointed yet naturally empathetic, words were never superfluous. We relished conversations with Sid and as illness robbed him of articulation, we longed for lengthier exchanges but appreciated every word offered, shared, remembered. We hoped to fill whatever absence created with words of our own to fill the void, knowing that we were conversing with our friend Sid.
Gone now but remembered is the tennis athlete, the garage carpenter, the patio host, the political commentator, the wise sage, the humorist. Especially missing was our fun golfing buddy. Sadly, missed were the writer’s tongue and cheek inquiries of this government employee’s insights into the “deep state.” Maybe we missed an opportunity to co-author a tell-all book. So thirsty now for those “cocktail of the evening” concoctions from the ambitious mixologist.
We love you, Sid. We will continue to love and look after your dear Nancy, not to worry. If we are to count our years by smiles as John Lennon said, then we are truly aged, and enough smiles, not tears, provided to see us for years to come.
Love,
Chris and Patrick
