In Memory of Sidney Kirkpatrick
It’s difficult to put into words what Sidney Kirkpatrick meant to me, both as a storyteller and as a friend. Sidney became a vital part of the journey to uncover the truth behind the Jeff Boppre case — not only through his remarkable skill as a writer and investigator, but through his unshakable belief in the importance of the story itself.
Sidney once told me he had no idea this project would follow him for so many years. Yet he carried it with the quiet persistence of someone who knew that stories of injustice and truth have a way of finding their time. Over the years, he unearthed a treasure trove of documents, audio tapes, and video archives — material that might otherwise have been lost to time. He entrusted me with all of it, as if passing a torch — not just of information, but of purpose.
My family and I were often the hosts when Sidney came to visit. Even though it was an open offer, he never hosted us, but when he came to our home for interviews, he was an incredible guest — gracious, humble, and endlessly curious. We shared long conversations, laughter, and moments of deep reflection that I will always treasure.
Sidney was a generous friend and one of the most captivating people I have ever known. His depth reached far beyond this story that came to bind us — he was endlessly curious, reflective, and alive with ideas.
There is nothing I wish more than that Sidney could see the work we are now completing — a work that exists, in large part, because of his dedication, his trust, and his friendship. His voice, his insight, and his presence remain woven into every frame and every word.
Thank you, Sidney — for believing this story mattered, and for believing in me. And above everything else, thank you, Sidney, for who you were to us all. We got it from here.
Your friend, Douglas Thornton
