Sandra's obituary

Sandra Hope Nelson, the youngest of five children, was born on March 2, 1961, in Brooklyn, New York, to Arthur, Sr. and Ida May Nelson. Her life was one marked by service, resilience, and profound care for others. These values were instilled early in life through her family, and Trinity Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY, where she was a member as a child and young adult. A musically-inclined child, Sandra studied the piano for six years, and later, as a voice major, attended New York City’s High School of Music and Art.

After graduating from high school and earning an Associate of Arts Degree from Borough of Manhattan Community College, Sandra enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. She served from August 1984 until August 1994, during this time continuing her education and training as a dental assistant. She received awards such as The Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service and the Airman Leadership School’s Distinguished Graduate Award. Earning the rank of Staff Sergeant, Sandra’s time in the Air Force was distinguished by her dedication and commitment, creating a path to a bright future, which was interrupted by the onset of a medical condition, leading to an honorable discharge.

At the conclusion of her military career, Sandra, stationed in Spokane, WA, decided to settle there. She continued to dedicate her time to serving others, beginning a long-time association with The United Way and often serving as a caregiver for elderly neighbors and friends. In 2005, she relocated to Graham, WA to be closer to her family. She continued her work with The United Way, volunteering for Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors and the Pierce County 2-1-1 call center. She also served on the Missionary Society and the food pantry at the Allen AME Church in Tacoma, WA, where she was a member until 2023.

Sandra did not allow her health challenges to interfere with her dreams and goals. She pursued and achieved her desire to invest in real estate; she became a self-proclaimed “dog mom”, adopting a series of loving rescue pets throughout the years. Her personal interests included sewing, traveling with family and friends, attending concerts, the theatre, and visiting museums. She had a special love for all things pertaining to black arts culture. These activities brought her great joy and enriched her life. Sandra had a warm, engaging smile and personality, one that made a person immediately feel welcome and valued. She was a caring and compassionate listener and encourager. Her life was an embodiment of the verse from Philippians 4:13 - “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

On January 7, 2026, Sandra transitioned from this life into eternity. She was predeceased by her parents, Arthur Nelson, Sr. and Ida May Nelson, and her sister, Yvonne Nelson. She is survived by, and leaves to cherish her memory: brothers, Kingsley, Dennis, and Arthur (Brenda); nieces Briana, Kara, Whitney; and a host of cousins, close relatives and friends. We thank God for Sandra’s life, one filled with love, faith, kindness, compassion, strength and resilience. May her memory continue to influence and inspire all who knew and loved her, until we meet again.
