I was deeply saddened to have recently learned of Sam’s passing. I flew with Sam at Murray Aviation in Oxnard, CA in the early seventies. He was my instructor pilot and hired me there after I obtained my ratings. He always made an effort to take me along on charter flights in order for me to build hours to meet the insurance minimum requirements for charter flights. He was a mentor and a friend and definitely helped me in launching my career. I am sure he is missed very much. I am very sorry for your loss.

I could not find any photos of Sam with myself so a did a little montage of Sam including with members of family on Annette's side.  My memories of Sam are of a genuinely all-around nice guy.  Being a thoughtful and gracious host when I visited the family in Haines. Always having nice things to say and willing to help out with something and coming through when needed.  I have flown with Sam a number of times between Juneau and Haines, and it was always a pleasure.  When weather permitted, he would take a scenic route over the ice fields.  Some time ago I sent him up a large box of old Aviation Week magazines which he shared with the other pilots and mechanics at the Juneau terminal.  He told me they were like girlie magazines for them.  I got a chuckle then when he told me that then, a still do again now! Even when Sam was not flying you somewhere he could be the one graciously driving you out to the ferry terminal in Haines as he did for me the last time I visited.  You will be missed Santa Sam.  All the best to Annette and the impacted families in your time of loss.

After Tinas and Evrens wedding was done on stage, it was late. Bill , Sam and I loaded tables and chairs, borrowed from the Senior Center, on to Bills flatbed truck. It was 2am, dark, and very quiet. We weren't as quiet. Sam unlocks the Center, looks for light, I ask is there a chance of someone coming out and shooting us? Sam , straight faced and calm with a impish grin, said "you know there is always a chance of that." I had so much fun that night with the two of them. Sam was a genuine, good and caring person. I appreciate the love he showed to those he cared about. We meet too few people in our lives that have qualities Sam had, I am glad he shared them with his family and friends, who loved him dearly.

I first met Sam nearly twenty-four years ago when Jade and I were roommates at Oregon State University. Sam flew down to visit Jade and took her shopping for home decor to spruce up our sad little dorm room. What a guy! Over the years, I've had the pleasure of attending several events with the family (graduation, wedding, family reunion) and Sam has always treated me like family. My husband and I will never forget our personal tour of the glacier in Sam's airplane. We mourn this loss and cherish these memories. Much love to the family in this difficult time.
