Ruben was a remarkable man who had a profound impact on my life. I had the privilege of being his personal trainer for more than 10 years. While I helped him stay physically strong and in shape, he gave me something even greater—wisdom and life lessons that I will carry with me forever.
Even in our last exchanges, he encouraged me and expressed confidence in my future. His generosity of spirit and the way he touched the lives of others will always be remembered.
My heartfelt condolences to his family. I am deeply grateful for having known him.
Thank you, Ruben. Your legacy lives on in all of us whose lives you inspired. May God bless you and grant you peace.

I was Reuben‘s divorce lawyer. He was my client but became my friend. What an amazingly generous, kind and patient man. We spent many beautiful days in San Francisco just hanging out. He cherished his family and grandkids. He will be greatly missed.

...I remember i couldn't get my seat belt to work, when the STOL pilot hit the full throttle. The twin engine islander roared and started rattling and accelerating towards the ocean on the impossibly short cement, crack laden runway. Reuben was in the front and over his shoulder i could see the loose instrument panel wildly bouncing up, down, back and forth.. luckily with the 30kt side wind, the pilot just had to turn the tires hard into it as we nearly wet the wheels. Reuben looked back over his shoulder at me, with a mischievous chuckle. It was a good ending on one of the several field trips I took with him, working on innovative indigenous marine conservation efforts and installing PV in dozens of villages. Reuben's unmatched generosity, curiosity, love for problem solving and sense of true adventure dramatically improved the lives of dozens of villages in some of the most colorful, fragile cultures and biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Legend.

Jenny and I enjoyed countless outings, dinners, concerts, etc with Emily and Reuben in the last 12 years and always remarked to each other about Reuben's zest for life. I joined the IOS Board in 2003 and developed a great friendship with Reuben especially after he moved to the Bay Area. It is rare to develop a close relationship late in life and I valued Reuben's friendship enormously. In the last two years we often discussed mortality, legacy, etc in deep personal ways and Reube taught me much. I miss him.
