Raymond's obituary

Raymond B. Welsh, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, went to be with God on May 30, 2024, at 10:10 AM in Coconut Creek, Florida. He was 90 years old.

Raymond was born on September 18, 1933, at 12:50 PM at Biltmore Hospital in Miami, Florida, to Carl and Vesta Welsh. He was a loving brother to Doris Fry and Pat Wilkins.

Raymond was married to the love of his life, Norma Welsh, for 68 wonderful years. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared countless memories. He is survived by his devoted wife, Norma, and their four children: Cathy Winquist, Vickie D’Amico, Robin (John) Griffiths, and Tim (Anne) Welsh. Raymond was also a cherished grandfather to 13 grandchildren—Janice, Jennifer, Jaclyn, Jessica, Robert, Carmen, Tonee, Angela, Nichole, Sean, Wayne, Melody, and Rachel—and a proud great-grandfather to 28 great-grandchildren.

Raymond's educational journey led him to the University of Florida, where he studied electrical and mechanical engineering. He enlisted in the United States Army and served proudly during the Korean War in Battery A, 3rd Guided Missile Battalion, 2nd Guided Missile Group. During his service, he trained as a Surface-to-Surface Missile Fire Control Crewman and earned the National Defense Service Medal. Following his active duty, Raymond continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Corporal at the Guided Missile Center.

Raymond's professional career was as remarkable as his military service. He worked as a Mechanical Engineer for Babcock and Wilcox on the Navy’s Nautilus project and taught electronics for the military while employed by RCA. However, he is best known as the owner of Ray's Cyclery, a beloved Schwinn franchise and family hometown bicycle shop in Pompano Beach, Florida, which he operated from 1968 to 1985.

Beyond his professional achievements, Raymond was an active member of his community and church. He was a devoted Boy Scouts leader, a skilled ham radio operator, and a dedicated Bible class teacher. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through every chapter.

Raymond's journey of faith began during his time at Ft. Bliss and White Sands, where he met and married Norma. Their union took place in New  Mexico on June 22, 1956, at 3:40 PM, officiated by probate judge Mabel Chavez, with Norma's mother, Stella Hensley, as a witness. This marriage not only brought him a wonderful wife but also two daughters, Cathy and Vickie, whom he loved dearly. Later, they were blessed with Robin and their "only boy," Tim, also known affectionately as "Precious."

Raymond’s life was filled with love, service, and devotion. His legacy of faith, dedication, and family will be cherished by all who knew him.

A memorial service to celebrate Raymond’s life will be held on June 15, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Sixth Street Church of Christ, located at 2190 SE 6th St, Pompano Beach, FL, 33062.

In lieu of flowers, we invite you to simply reflect on your memories of Raymond and cherish the time spent with one another. His kindness, wisdom, and love will be deeply missed but always remembered.

Rest in peace, Raymond. You have earned your place in heaven and will always be in our hearts.
