Rachel's obituary
Rachel Jane Duffy (née Dines)
March 9, 1967 – March 2, 2025
Rachel Jane Duffy, a beacon of warmth, love, and light, passed away on March 2, 2025, in Dana Point, CA, at the age of 57. Though her time with us feels far too short, the joy, kindness, and unwavering love she shared with the world will live on forever.
Born on March 9, 1967, in Ipswich, England, Rachel spent her early years in the English countryside before embarking on a life-changing visit to Newport Beach, CA, at the age of 20. There, she fell in love with the sunshine, the ocean breeze, and most importantly, Shawn Duffy—the man who would become her partner in adventure and in life. They married in 1988 and built a beautiful life together, rooted in love, laughter, and an unshakable bond.
Rachel's happiest and most cherished role was being a mother to her two daughters, Courtney and Megan. She embraced motherhood with open arms and a full heart, becoming their greatest champion, steadfast protector, and constant source of encouragement. Whether cheering on the sidelines, organizing family traditions, or simply offering a reassuring hug, Rachel was the glue that held everything together.
In 2008, the Duffy's relocated to Houston, Texas for Shawn’s career—a transition that was only made possible through Rachel’s unwavering devotion to her family. With Courtney already in college and Megan in high school, Rachel embraced this new chapter with her characteristic resilience and grace, ensuring that their home remained a place of love, stability, and support. Throughout her life, Rachel’s strength revealed itself in countless ways, from navigating new beginnings to facing life’s challenges with optimism. One of the most profound examples of this was her selfless act of donating her own kidney to Megan during her battle with kidney failure—a testament to the depth of her love and courage. Though Rachel made the most of Texas, forming deep friendships and finding joy in the everyday, her heart always longed for the ocean.
When both daughters had embarked on their own journeys, she and Shawn followed their hearts back to the California coast, settling in Dana Point in 2021. There, they found their paradise, one filled with joy and the laughter of their growing family. With the arrival of grandchildren—Hadley, Ellie, Kit, John, and Maeve—Rachel’s heart grew even fuller. She adored her grandchildren beyond words.
Rachel is survived by her husband, Shawn Duffy; her daughter and son-in-law Courtney and Tyler Sonksen and their children Hadley, Ellie, Kit and John; her daughter and son-in-law Megan and Kyle Ulses and their child Maeve; her mother, Sylvia Dines; and her brothers, Nick and Jeremy Dines. She is reunited in peace with her father, Eric Dines, whose memory she always carried in her heart.
Rachel’s life was a testament to love—love for family, love for friendship, and love for the simple, beautiful moments that make life extraordinary. As Winnie the Pooh so perfectly put it:
"If there is ever a tomorrow when we’re not together, there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart… I’ll always be with you."
