Penny's obituary

Phyllis (Penny) Epstein Grubin

January 5, 1929 – February 27, 2026

Phyllis (Penny) Epstein Grubin, 97, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, in Carlsbad, California. Born in The Bronx, New York, on January 5, 1929, to Jeanette and George Rose, Penny lived a life defined by independence, courage, and deep love for her family.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. Marty Grubin; her children, Beth Robin Lieberman and Steven Philip Epstein; her grandchildren, Matthew Fine (Amy), Nicole Scranton (Michael), and Carlynne Epstein-Jefferson (Jeff); and her cherished great-grandchildren, Michaela Fine, Madison Scranton, and Ryan Scranton.

Penny was sharp, fearless, and always spoke her mind. She told the truth as she saw it — and somehow still managed to do it with love.

She was entrepreneurial, proudly owning The Donut Shop in Westwood Village, and she loved following the stock market and invested wisely.

Penny enjoyed making a home feel beautiful and welcoming, and she never turned down a competitive game of Mahjong.

We will miss her love, her voice, her wisdom, and her unmistakable presence in our lives.
