Michael's obituary
It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Michael "Mike" Tsuboi, also known affectionately as Sabi. Born August 2, 1978, Michael left us too soon on May 12, 2024. Mike was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and dear friend to so many.
Michael is survived by his father, Harry Tsuboi (and wife, Nahoko), his mother, Gwen Tsuboi, his sister, Janet Vouzas (and husband, Andreas) and nephew Alexander George Vouzas. He will also be sadly missed by his beloved furry companion Leo and so many friends that were family to him.
Mike was born in Wheeling, Illinois and grew up in Calgary, AB until the age of 14 when he moved to Richmond, BC. That is where he developed his love for the game of hockey and the Calgary Flames, both of which continued throughout his life. Living in Vancouver for 30 years surrounded by friends who were Canucks fans could not turn him. He was loyal to the Flames just as he was loyal to his friends and family.
It was in Richmond, that Mike established a close-knit group of friends that have always loved and supported him. At the age of 18, his friends and family almost lost him to a serious car accident, which damaged his heart and lungs. There were three months in hospital, three surgeries and two years on crutches. This was a life altering experience which Mike had to build himself back up from, both physically and mentally.
Out of this experience, he found a new career path in financial planning, starting his own advisory business in 2007. Through dedication, care and a lot of hard work, he built Dream Harbour Wealth Advisors, of which Mike was President and Senior Wealth Advisor. He specialized in helping clients outperform the market and was extremely skilled at doing so, whilst ensuring his clients' dreams were safe with him.
Outside of work, Mike lived an active lifestyle, continuing to play hockey and golf. He was very involved coaching and volunteering with junior hockey in the lower mainland, most recently as a coach of the Greater Vancouver Canadians under 18s. His goal was to realize every ounce of potential out of these ambitious young players, many of whom wanted to play pro hockey.
On a personal level, Mike was always there for you when you needed him. He gave great advice and accepted people as they are. He was generous and kind, always taking care of his friends, not requiring anything in return. He just wanted everyone to have a good time. He loved animals, especially his dog Leo and treated him like a king. He also loved a good negroni!
Mike always had a feeling that his heart would only be able to take him so far in this life, so he lived his life to the fullest and inspired others to do the same.
A Celebration of Life service for Michael will be held on June 9, 2024 from 1:00-3:00 pm at Quilchena Golf and Country Club. His well-lived life will be honored, his love and laughter remembered, and his legacy celebrated. In our hearts, Michael will forever remain a symbol of joy, resilience, and genuine love.
